Cars are staples of the horror genre as they suggest adventure, the ability to hit the open road, and sometimes the false promise of escape. There are several scary movies about characters having car breakdown that leaves them in a remote area and fighting for their lives, or maybe the car itself is bad. The movie from 2021 Titane impressed with a main character getting intimate with a car in one unforgettable scene.
From a movie based on a Stephen King book turned classic to some 70s movies about cars gone wrong, Redditors recommend their favorite car horror movies that are always entertaining.
Black Cadillac (2003)
Not available to stream
The three main characters Robbie, CJ and Scott try to have a cozy evening in Wisconsin during the winter. Instead of being stalked by a killer, they’re followed by a 1957 Cadillac limousine who wants them dead, but first really wants them to suffer. While this is definitely a campy storyline, it’s still unnerving enough to hold the interest of horror fans. The film has an interesting ending and is structured as if the car were a person.
Joy Ride (2001)
Stream on Hulu
redditor marctheshark10 posted that they wanted horror movie recommendations “where the car breaks down in a remote place with psychos/murderers. Or similar movies about road trips gone wrong” and mentioned Joy Ride.
The film features one of the best horror films of the 2000s, as brothers Fuller and Lewis Thomas set out to give Lewis’ love interest Venna Wilcox a lift. Instead of having fun and listening to music and making jokes, they meet a killer named Rusty Nail. This is a corny, fun horror movie that offers nothing fancy or creative, but is an entertaining time nonetheless. The villain is also memorable.

When it comes to classic car horror movies, there is one Stephen King adaptation that always comes up. Redditor gimmefuelgimmefire posted “I have seen Christineand mentioned a few others that they like to watch.
John Carpenter directed Christine, which follows Arnie Cunningham as he buys a 1958 Plymouth Fury that turns out to be bad. The car experiences emotions like jealousy and wants Arnie all to itself. While it sounds hard to be truly terrified of a movie about a car, Christine feels horrifying and dangerous.
Tourist trap (1979)
Streaming on AMC+ and Hudder
Redditor Jaffa Cake Lad said, “If you like really weird movies, tourist trap is absolutely one of a kind and will suit what you are looking for. “Mr. Slausen has a store that is considered a perfect place for people passing by to stop and look around. Unfortunately for travelers, he is a ruthless killer.
tourist trap follows the typical slasher movie formula with a twist ending, and it’s interesting to watch the movie and see if there will be any last girl or survivors. mr. Slausen is a powerful villain.
Stream on HBO Max
One Redditor suggested To break downdescribed it as “A couple is driving across the country, their car is broken down in a desolate area, a truck driver helps them and says he is taking the women to dinner in the next town to call for help.”
It’s creepy to see Jeff Taylor hanging out at a gas station with no idea where his wife Amy is, and the characters watch out for each other, using their perception and intelligence to try to survive. It’s a realistic enough premise, and after watching To break downa road trip will feel creepy.
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Rent on AppleTV
Redditor gimmefuelgimmefire said they had looked”Maximum overdrive,” which Stephen King both wrote and directed. When the Earth is affected by a comet, all machines, such as cars, are also changed. The film is based on a short story King wrote called “Trucks”.
The movie isn’t the most acclaimed movie, but it’s a fun story and fans of King will definitely want to see it. Emilio Estevez plays one of the main characters.

Redditor Tea and Horror said: “There is also” Rubber (about a killer wheel if that counts)” and redditor norand monster replied: “I saw Rubber and loved it” because it’s a “so bad it’s good” kind of movie.
There are many good scenes in bad horror movies and so are Rubber, which is incredibly campy. A car tire is dangerous and has telekinetic powers, causing it to kill people. While the film may not hold up compared to many others in the genre, there are some visually interesting scenes with the band.
Rent on AppleTV
redditor naudski said “How about? highwaymen, which is not about an evil car that kills people, but about a serial killer who uses a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado to get around and stalk his victims. The main character, Rennie, wants to find the killer who ended the life of his wife.
Highwaymen is not a very popular or well-known horror film and may not be a match for others in the auto-horror subgenre, at least not in terms of character development or even plot. But the car scenes will appeal to fans.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Stream on Tubic
Redditor Lukan_N7 posted that “The Wolf Creek movies are pretty good” and the first movie from 2005 is considered one of the best horror movies from Australia. Kristy Earl, Ben Mitchell and Liz Hunter are backpacking when their car breaks down and they meet Mick Taylor, who says that he’ I’ll help them, but of course who’s the villain of the story.
Mick is one of the most gruesome killers in any horror movie, as he is gruesome, violent, and diabolical. He waits in these woods for people hiking and camping and getting into car trouble so he can kill them.
Dead End (2003)
Stream on Tubic
One Redditor recommended “Dead end,A 2003 horror film about a family who drives across the country on December 24, and their journey gets weirder and more terrifying.
The family sees a woman with a baby, so they try to help, but that can turn out to be a terrible decision. Dead end is the kind of story that plays with reality, as the main character Marion isn’t sure if she’s dreaming or if the horrors ahead are true.
