10 of the best mid-sized SUVs on the market today that can do almost anything

Hyundai Palisade Front Gray Cornering

In today’s time, we want one thing in order to be able to do everything. Twenty years ago we had several electronic devices that performed different functions, but now our smartphone does everything while being the size of a calculator. This philosophy has extended to the types of cars we drive.

About two decades ago, the SUV segment of the auto industry took off and since then it has become hugely popular with many manufacturers turning their sedans and hatchbacks into crossovers and SUVs – a metamorphosis that continues to this day. The mid-sized SUV segment saw a change in its definition as automakers decided to make them more luxurious to compete with premium manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Some vehicles were priced naturally – such as the Range Rover Sport – while others offer much the same basic equipment for a quarter of the price.

So although there are many medium sized ones SUVs on the market, these are designed to do almost anything their owners need from them. With that, here are ten of the best mid-sized SUVs on sale right now that can do just about anything.

10/10 Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is designed to be not only the cheaper alternative to the full-size Range Rover, but also to provide a sportier driving experience – or as sporty as a large SUV can be. The first generation was based on the Discovery platform, which meant it was extremely heavy – not exactly part of the sportiness formula.

The second generation improved a lot as it was a shortened version of the full-size Range Rover platform, resulting in a lighter and stiffer base. The SVR version brought the Range Rover Sport into the realm of the BMW X5M, while still offering off-road capability. Building on the previous model, the new Range Rover Sport is now sportier than ever – only with a much higher price tag. While the Range Rover Sport will rarely be used for anything other than a family car, it can still do pretty much everything needed from a normal car.

9/10 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee started out as the automaker’s mid-sized option, above the regular Cherokee but below the seven-seater Commander. Jeep added some more luxurious touches to the interior, but it was still pretty cheap to start with. The next generation improved greatly and became a hit despite its various mechanical issues.

The facelifted version improved further, became quite reliable and capable of both living in the city and conquering the outdoors. The new Grand Cherokee has moved up a luxury class and is now almost on par with the Range Rover Sport – but for much less. It is even available with a 4-cylinder hybrid.

8/10 Genesis GV70

The Genesis GV70 is an interesting vehicle. Built on the platform of the G70 sedan, the GV70 exudes sportiness and luxury normally only found in German brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. In addition to the great driving dynamics, the GV70 looks fantastic – just as beautiful as the Jaguar F-Pace.

Even though the GV70 is designed as a more luxurious family-friendly SUV, it can go off the beaten track if necessary. It has plenty of room in the back for a trip to the local nursery or a family campsite. All this for less than its equivalent German rival.

7/10 Hyundai Palisade

The Hyundai Palisade is definitely one of the best SUV bargains on the market today. The Palisade is reliable, comfortable and well built. While it can’t offer the same level of performance as its rivals from Germany or the UK, it’s still a brilliant choice.

The Palisade is very family oriented and even the promotional ads and website propaganda show him towing caravans and boats and generally driving on dirt tracks. It also shows how easy the Palisade is in a town or city. Hyundai is currently doing a wonderful job with its cars.

6/10 Kia Telluride

Another Korean Bargain, the Kia Telluride offers everything you would expect from a mid-sized SUV, all for less than the price of a Toyota Avalon. The Telluride may not be the best looking SUV out there, but for the equipment and peace of mind, we don’t really care about the looks.

The Telluride has a relatively punchy V6 engine as standard. The interior isn’t particularly luxurious, but it feels sufficiently premium and the build quality is on par with anything from Japan. Sure, the Telluride comes last in a drag race, but who’s going to do that anyway? It can easily do the school career both in the cities of California and the frozen cities of Alaska.

5/10 Toyota Highlander

For a little more than the Telluride you could have the premium Toyota Highlander. With the introduction of the fourth generation in 2019, the current Highlander is still fairly new. Unfortunately, the 3.5-liter V6 was dropped for the 2023 model year due to stricter EPA emissions regulations, and replaced with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4.

The Highlander can start at the same price as an Avalon, but can quickly rise to almost Sequoia prices when it is turned off. Regardless of the price, the Highlander is a great alternative to the RAV4 Prime, offering more space and functionality while costing less.

4/10 BMW X5

The BMW X5 was the SUV that really started the current crossover and SUV trend, showing luxury, performance and excellent build quality to the masses. It debuted with a diesel and a V8 and eventually got better over the generations.

The current X5 is the most expensive of all, although it is still within the reach of many – compared to vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and Range Rover. The current X5 is the best yet with beautiful styling, premium interiors and great engines. While the X5 isn’t specifically designed to get off the perfectly paved road, it can still do it when absolutely necessary.

3/10 Mercedes-Benz GLE

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is the direct competitor to the BMW X5 and thus offers most of the same options and equipment – only with a Silver Arrow on the front. Unlike the X5, the GLE is already on its second name, as it changed from the ML-Class to the GLE-Class midway through the previous generation, to align with Stuttgart’s new naming strategies.

While the GLE is a good vehicle, it is seen more as a fashion statement than a true SUV. That said, it comes with adjustable air suspension and smart drivetrain modes that can get it out of a tricky situation when going off-road. The GLE has a number of 6- and 8-cylinder engines, producing more than enough power to keep the lineup interesting.

2/10 Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango is a great SUV in that it is the closest thing the automotive industry has to a fully featured SUV. While the Jeep Grand Cherokee – which shares its platform – is designed more for comfortable off-road driving, the Durango is the Dodge Challenger of the SUV segment.

The Durango even comes with not one, but three different V8s in addition to the base V6. Dodge has the famous . added hellcat V8 for the 2021 Durango model year and will add it again for 2023 as a broadcast to the Durango SRT model. Interestingly, the existing Durango Hellcat is one of the fastest and fastest SUVs ever produced – quite an achievement when the segment is filled with Lamborghinis, Porsches, Aston Martins and BMWs. Plus, the Durango has seven seats, which makes it that much more impressive.

1/10 Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner is one of the SUVs on the market today and is almost a vehicle for all kinds of people. It can be just as much a daily driver for a family of four living in a city, as it can be a serious off-roader tackling the most dangerous trails around the world.

The 4Runner doesn’t have a particularly great drivetrain, but it’s extremely durable and easily customizable – some of the reasons it’s extremely popular with off-road enthusiasts. And all this while the current generation model is more than 12 years old. In the world of SUVs, which can be everything to all people, the Toyota 4Runner is definitely one of the best of the best.
