If I put the priorities of the average C8 Corvette buyer in order, gas mileage would probably be down. However, given road trip opportunities and current gas prices, that could soon change. Does this mean the fuel-efficient sports car shopper should avoid the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette? As it turns out, not necessarily.
For a V8 sports car, the 2022 C8 Chevrolet Corvette knows how to sip its fuel
Admittedly, the 2022 C8 Chevrolet Corvette isn’t the most fuel-efficient sports car. A Mazda Miata or Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ will easily beat its fuel economy numbers. And as we experienced first hand, a C8 in town is quite thirsty.
But since the 2022 C8 Corvette has a 6.2-liter V8, the gas mileage is more than decent. According to the EPA, the 2022 Corvette will hit 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. However, beating those EPA estimates is more than possible. Car and driverThe long-term 495-horsepower C8 Corvette Z51, for example, got 26 mpg on the highway, at 75 mph no less. That’s thanks to the cylinder deactivation of the V8 and some engine changes Chevrolet has made for 2022.
In addition, the gas mileage of the 2022 Corvette matches or exceeds several of its naturally aspirated V8 rivals. For example, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT only gets 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. And that’s with a smaller, less powerful V8 than the ‘Vette’ has.
However, the 2022 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 matched the highway fuel economy of the C8 in the car and driver tests. That’s even more impressive since the T/A 392 has a 6.4-liter V8, although it produces 10 horsepower less. It’s worth noting, though, that the C8 Corvette is faster than both it and the supercharged Challenger Hellcat. So you get more performance per mpg. Also, the wider tires of the Widebody models lower their EPA rating.
It’s a similar story with the NA V8 sports car beating the gas mileage of the 2022 Corvette: the Chevrolet Camaro SS. It may be slower than the C8, but it gets a claimed 26 mpg on the highway. However, Car and Driver saw 30 mpg when it tested an automatic SS. That’s cylinder deactivation for you.

Interestingly enough, the C8 Corvette had higher gas mileage on the highway before 2022. But so many people bought the Z51 Performance Package that statistically it acted as a standard feature. And since it cuts highway fuel economy, the EPA had to lower the Corvette’s 2022 estimates from 27 mpg to 24 mpg. Though on the plus side, those 2022 model year engine modifications increased the city rating by 1 mpg.
The reason the Z51 package affects the gas mileage of the C8 Corvette is that it has a shorter axle ratio. That’s great for 0-60 and ¼-mile times because it increases torque at the rear wheel. But it also revs the V8 at higher speeds at highway speeds. That way it burns more fuel.
However, there is a simple solution – don’t get it. Yes, you lose the electronic differential lock, bigger brake discs, sportier suspension, cooling system upgrades, 5 horsepower and 5 lb-ft of torque. But if you don’t take your Corvette to the track, these are not strictly necessary. And in addition to saving money with the configurator, you also save some money at the pump. cars.com saw 29.1 mpg on the highway and 25.4 mpg in general with his non-Z51 C8 – and he “didn’t drive it carefully”.
Will the 2023 C8 be more efficient?

The EPA has already released gas mileage figures for the 2023 C8 Chevrolet Corvette and they are unchanged from 2022. So if you get a 2023 Corvette with the Z51 package, the EPA estimates you’ll get 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. to see.
As for the 2023 C8 Z06, the EPA has not released any estimates yet. However, since it has a 670 horsepower 5.5-litre V8 that revs up to 8600 rpm, fuel economy probably won’t be great. Admittedly, I can imagine Z06 owners being even less interested in fuel economy figures. But yes, even they have to pay for gas.
