2022 Subaru Legacy is now ranked as the best mid-size car under $30K

What’s the best mid-sized car under $30,000 you can buy this year? According to recent tests and studies from Consumer Reports (via subscription), the 2022 Subaru Legacy is: number one overall be first Fuel consumption and highest safety scorescosts less than today’s average new car.

According to Consumer Reports, Legacy ranks number one as the top choice because the sedan offers good performance, reliability and owner satisfaction. The scores are based on the most recent tests and surveys from CR owners. The Legacy ranks second mid-sized of nine models with a top score of 87, surpassing the best-selling Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

Consumer Reports says: “The Legacy offers a super-comfortable ride that surpasses some luxury cars. Handling is responsive, but not sporty. This four-wheel drive sedan comes equipped with a choice of two four-cylinder engines: a 182 horsepower, 2.5-liter and a 260 hp 2.4 liter turbo.

Is there a downside to the Legacy? CR says, “The stock motor is adequate, but makes an obnoxious roar when pressed.”

CR also says: “It delivers a decent 28 mpg in total. The turbo version delivers strong acceleration and is quieter. We like that the well-tuned CVT mimics the shift patterns of conventional automatics.”

What is the fuel economy of 2022 Legacy?

The EPA says the Legacy XT and Sport trims with the 2.4-liter engine deliver the EPA miles estimated at 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway. The standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-4 engine gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27/35 mpg in the city/highway.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Legacy?

Even with the recent price hike, Legacy is affordable. The 2022 Legacy sedan is available in six trim levels. The 2022 midsize sedan starts at $24,490 for the base trim, Premium ($26,740), Sport ($30,285), Limited ($31,440), Limited XT ($35,990) and Touring XT ($37,690). Destination and delivery charges are included in the above prices ($995).
