Which four-wheel drive Subaru vehicles are the best? Motor Trend’s Ultimate Car Ranking for the Second Half of 2022 Says the Recently Updated 2023 Subaru Outback and 2023 Crosstrek score best-in-class awards.

The 2022 Subaru Forester and the 2023 Subaru Ascent were not forgotten; they are top ranked by M/T and the runner-up ranks best in class, and the Subaru Impreza 2023 and 2023 Subaru Legacy rank third in their class.

2023 Subaru Outback is the #1 best-ranked mid-sized SUV

The 2023 Subaru Outback ranks number one in the mid-sized SUV segment, with a Motor Trend rating of 8.8/10. M/T says: “When is an SUV not an SUV? If it is the Subaru Outback. This vehicle resembles a high-riding station wagon, but it has long been a favorite among crossover shoppers. The Outback has been around since the mid-century. 1990, and the current generation debuted in 2020. Subaru is applying several updates for 2023 to keep the Outback a top competitor.”

The Outback 2023 gets a price increase and the trim levels are; the base version costs $29,620 (+$800), Premium ($31,920 + $900), New Onyx Edition with a 2.5-liter engine ($34,720), Limited ($36,520 + $1,050), Touring ($41,070 + $1,700), Outback Wilderness ($39,670 + $800), Onyx Edition XT ($39,820 + $2,800), Limited XT ($40,920 + $1,050) and Touring XT ($43,520 + $1,700). The price includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek ranks number one in the subcompact SUV segment with an M/T rating of 9.2/10. Motor Trend says the Crosstrek is “something of a reverse halo car for Subaru. This small crossover is the brand’s entry-level SUV and has become an icon with its fun color options, rugged styling and elevated ride height.”

M/T says: “The news for the Crosstrek 2023 is a Special Edition trim. Based on the Premium trim, the Crosstrek Special Edition adds dark exterior accents, red interior accents and a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen.”

All 2023 Subaru Crosstrek trim levels will receive a $600 price increase, including destination and delivery charges.

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is now available in six trim levels for US customers. The base trim costs $24,870, Premium, ($26,020), Special Edition ($27,970), Sport ($29,220), Limited ($30,720) and Crosstrek Hybrid ($38,070). Prices include destination and delivery charges ($1,225).

The 2023 Ascent SUV ranks number two in the 3-row SUV segment with a Motor Trend score of 8.8/10. M/T says: “Subaru debuted the three-row Ascent SUV for the 2019 model year, and for 2023 it is giving its largest vehicle a mid-cycle update. The latest Ascent adds the best we’ve seen from Subaru in the past few years, including updated design language, a massive vertical touchscreen, and improved safety features.”
