Summer is just around the corner and that means it’s a great time to take a scenic road trip. And while driving an SUV or minivan you get the most ease of use and comfort, while a sports car gives you the most fun on the road. Here are seven of the best sports cars to take on a road trip.
Feel the wind in your hair with the Ford Mustang GT Convertible

There is hardly any American car more iconic than the Ford Mustang Convertible. With a rumbling V8 engine under the hood and a taut suspension, you probably wouldn’t believe the Mustang GT is also a great car to take on a road trip across the U.S.
Despite its performance aspects, the Mustang GT has a trunk roomy enough for a few carry-ons, a 16-gallon fuel tank, and the ability to pick up an EPA-estimated 14 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Those aren’t exactly fuel-sipping numbers, but who cares if you have the wind in your hair?
The Chevrolet Camaro works well for road trips
What has four usable seats, a decent cargo volume and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine? A Chevrolet Camaro! You thought ‘Honda Civic’, didn’t you? Anyway, Carvana reports that the Chevy Camaro has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 275 horsepower, has a cargo volume of 9.3 cubic feet and can accommodate four people relatively comfortably. If those attributes don’t scream “road trip car”, then we don’t know what is.
Fancy a fun and classic outing? Buy a Fiat 124 Spider
The Fiat 124 Spider not only has a stylish look inside and out, but it is also a decent road trip car. We say “decent” because the 124 Spider is a two-seater after all. But if that amount of space works for you, then you’ll love its 160-hp 1.4-litre turbo engine that can be mated to a six-speed automatic or manual transmission and gets up to 35 mpg on the highway. Don’t forget that this roadster is limited in trunk space, as the cargo hold measures a mere 4.9 cubic feet.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata provides spicy fun during the trip
Believe it or not, the Mazda MX-5 is a decent car for a road trip. Sure, it lacks cabin and cargo space, but if you only cover a shorter distance, the MX-5 will give you the most fun along the way. The 2.0-litre 181 horsepower engine has good power and can get up to 34 mpg on the highway.
Plus, the MX-5’s razor-sharp handling makes it a joy to drive on twisty roads, and the 7-inch infotainment screen and six-speaker audio provide on-the-go entertainment.
The Dodge Challenger has plenty of room
Being a muscle car, you wouldn’t think the Dodge Challenger would be a good road trip car, but it is. The Challenger has plenty of front and rear seat space, a base 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out 305 horsepower and gets up to 30 mpg highway, and a large 16.2 cubic foot trunk. Those three traits alone should be enough to pack you up for a week-long vacation knowing the Challenger will get you there in comfort and style.
The Chevrolet Corvette has two seats and a lot of power
If you overlook the fact that the Chevrolet Corvette is a true sports car, you begin to realize its road trip potential. Its base 6.2-liter V8 engine makes 455 horsepower, but it can also achieve up to 24 mpg on the highway. The Corvette is also a two-seater, but has enough space for two adults. Plus, with 15 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, the Corvette is more practical than you might initially think.
If you want fun with a dose of practicality, buy a Porsche Cayman
There is no doubt that the Porsche Cayman is a bona fide canyon carver with its spirited handling and mid-engine layout. However, the 2.0-liter turbocharged 300 horsepower can get up to 27 mpg on the highway, it has plenty of legroom and it has a trunk with a cargo volume of 9.7 cubic feet.
Not to mention that it also has a “frunk” with an extra 5.2 cubic feet of space. That said, the Porsche Cayman is qualified to carve a canyon and get you there in relative comfort, even if the canyon is 800 miles away.
Sports car for long car journeys
While you may think road trips are only for SUVs and minivans, this list shows that a sports car can provide plenty of transportation, too. Sure, it might not be that comfortable or practical, but any of these sports cars will have you going wherever you go with a big smile on your face.
