German luxury car manufacturer Audi would stop making internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and focus solely on electric vehicles by 2033, a top official said on Tuesday.

The auto major would stop production of the current models powered by ICE and begin the transition to sell only electric vehicles from 2033, said Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon.

The company would manufacture all existing petrol-powered models and sell them until 2032 for the transition to electric vehicles, Dhillon said.

In response to a question about incidents involving battery-operated vehicles going up in flames, he stated that all battery components were brought separately and assembled in the factories by trained professionals with the utmost respect for ‘safety’ and ‘quality’.

According to Dhillon, following the opening of Audi Approved Plus, the company’s used car showroom, it was the 17th outlet of 22 slated to be inaugurated this year.

Audi India reported sales of 101% in 2021 compared to last year and during the first six months (January-June 2022). It witnessed a 49% jump, he added.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Audi launched its flagship sedan, the new Audi A8 L, in India. The launch was also announced by the automaker on Twitter. Audi pledges to “open new new worlds for progress” and prides itself on bringing “new generation luxury” with the Audi A8 L.

Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head, Audi India: “The Audi A8 L is a symbol of uncompromising transportation and the latest model brings even more glamour, comfort and technology. With the new Audi A8 L, we also offer our discerning customers more choice and greater customization options. The Audi A8 L Celebration Edition and Audi A8 L Technology are designed to reflect the personalities of our customers down to the last detail.”

The Audi A8L has been launched in India in two variants. The Audi A8 L Celebration Edition is available as a 5-seater and Audi A8 L technology is available in 4- and 5-seat configurations, priced at INR 1.29 crores and INR 1.57 crores (ex-showroom) respectively.

The sedan is available in 8 standard exterior colors: Terra Grey, District Green, Firmament Blue, Floret Silver, Glacier White, Manhattan Grey, Vesuvius Gray and Mythos Black, the automaker said and is available in 4 interior colors Mother of Pearl Beige, Cognac Brown, Sard Brown and Black.
