Best electric trucks for 2022, tested

Car and driver

Only three battery-electric pickup trucks are available for the 2022 model year, though more will be released in the coming years. This trio of trucks claims to offer the functionality of a pickup truck with the efficiency of a battery-electric powertrain. Still, these three offerings cater to vastly different types of buyers. One puts an electric spin on America’s best-selling car, another combines luxury equipment with a “just right” size, while the third option focuses on the kid in us who still longs for a life-sized Tonka truck. Here are the best electric trucks for 2022, ranked.

3. GMC Hummer EV

The GMC Hummer EV knows how ridiculous a concept it is (an electric revival of the typical gas-guzzler? You’re kidding), and it leans completely into the bit. Heck, GMC calls the truck’s launch control setup Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode. When engaged, this 1000 horsepower three-engine behemoth makes its way to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. If that’s not enough for you, check out the Hummer’s Extract mode, which lifts the truck nearly 16 inches off the ground, or the Crab Walk mode which, thanks to four-wheel steering, can drive the truck diagonally around obstacles.

For all its riotous fun, the Hummer EV is spectacularly expensive. Blame it on it being strictly available in loaded Edition 1 version for 2022 (cheaper and less powerful variants of the model will trickle out over the coming model years).

Its 7,500-pound towing capacity is also significantly less than the other two electric trucks available for 2022. The Hummer is also extraordinarily heavy, with an estimated curb weight north of 9,000 pounds. Still, GMC claims the Hummer will travel 329 miles on a full charge of its massive 212.7 kWh battery pack.

  • Car and driver rating: 7.5/10
  • Base Price: $110,295

2. Rivian R1T

The Rivian R1T hit the market a fraction earlier than the other two electric trucks on this list, making it the first battery-powered pickup to hit our market. We gave it an Editor’s Choice award for its stylish looks, 514 miles of EPA-estimated range, quick acceleration and admirable off-road capability.

Power is provided by four electric motors that receive electricity from a 128.9 kWh battery pack. With a total of 835 horsepower, the setup propels the R1T to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Despite its smaller size compared to its electric truck competition in 2022, the R1T offers the most towing capacity in this segment at 11,000 pounds.

Inside, the R1T feels like a bona fide luxury vehicle. That said, we wish Rivian complemented the large touchscreen with hard buttons for controlling simple functions like adjusting the rear-view mirrors. We also wish the truck was compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Overall, though, the R1T brings out more positives than negatives.

  • Car and driver rating: 8.5/10
  • Base Price: $68,575

1. F-150 Lightning

Although we gave the Ford F-150 Lightning the same rating as the Rivian R1T, we ultimately awarded the Blue Oval electric pickup the top spot on this list for its greater appeal. We’re talking specifically about the $41,769 starting price that undercuts that of the Rivian by more than $25,000 (note that the entry-level 2023 F-150 Lightning will see a $7,000 price increase).

Ford is offering the Lightning with two battery packs for customers to choose from: a 98.0 kWh unit with an EPA-rated 230-mile range and a 131.0 kWh configuration with a range of up to 320 miles. Lightnings equipped with the smaller pack produce 452 horsepower, while the larger pack makes 580 horses. The latter setup also provides the truck with a towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds.

For better or worse, the exterior and interior designs of the F-150 Lightning are not unique to the model. However, certain decors, such as the front light bar, are specific to the battery-electric truck. While the Lightning’s plastic-heavy interior feels a little underwhelming in the truck’s $92,019 Platinum disguise, the pickup’s range of models, relatively low entry costs, and over 200 miles of EPA-rated driving range make it a great one. combination worthy of its place on our annual Editor’s Choice list and the top spot on this list.

  • Car and driver rating: 8.5/10
  • Base Price: $41,769
