Best Interior Upholstery Cleaners 2022

Glossy trim panels still have fans among some drivers, but the more muted tones of the plastics and surfaces in today’s cars mean the focus of our test is on cleaning.

Aside from glass, most upholstery products can handle virtually any interior surface, including some leather panels with care. Whether it’s removing muddy stains from sill panels or removing greasy deposits from door leaves, an upholstery cleaner is the way to go, and our test focused on removing grime to restore the material’s natural finish.

We applied crushed chocolate and a lubricating oil to a plastic panel, then tackled them with limited wiping and cleaner. After letting the panel dry, we evaluated the progress. Price played a part in the end result, but the emphasis was on cleaning.

Dodo Juice Total Wipe Out

Over the years we’ve tested Total Wipe Out in a variety of formats, including a concentrate that required dilution, and now Essex producer Dodo Juice has settled for a ready-to-use version for a competitive £10 per litre.

It can be diluted 50:50 with water to make it go further, but this pre-prepared mix worked well in our test. As you would expect, it can be used on soft and hard surfaces inside and outside the car, including light colored fabrics without stains if used with care. It can be sprayed directly onto the surface, or onto a cloth in areas where overspray can be a problem. In our test, the overall result was very tight, but good progress over the two points, plus the great prize, gave Total Wipe Out another win.

It was the best in terms of oil here, and while Detailers United was very marginally the most effective cleaner overall overall, it wasn’t enough difference to overcome Dodo Juice’s obvious price advantage.

Detailers United Interior Dash & Trim Cleaner

This year is the test debut for Detailers United, which has a huge range of detailing kits. This cleaner has a pleasant citrus scent and can be used on hard and soft surfaces.

The performance stood out and marginally outperformed the results, with only minor traces of the oil and chocolate remaining. But that wasn’t enough to nullify the winning Dodo Juice’s price advantage. The packaging also states that the product is best used neat, so it cannot go further by diluting

Kenotek Pro Interior Cleaner

There is a lot of text on the packaging, but very little of it is in English, so you have to go to the website to learn a lot about the Kenotek Pro Interior Cleaner. There you learn that the pleasant smell is John-Paul Gaultier aftershave.

It is also there that you learn that it can be used on soft and hard surfaces and that you need to let it react before working with a cloth or brush. The research is worth it, because the Kenotek managed to combine thorough cleaning with a competitive price.

CarPlan No1 Super Valet interior detailer

It’s interesting to see how manufacturers think we like interior cleaners to smell – and this is a “cotton fresh” twist on citrus and aftershave.

Like the others in our top four, it’s a jack of all trades that can handle all types of materials and surfaces. It is intended to clean without altering the appearance of the surface. It may not be able to match our winner or the Kenotek, but the larger 600ml bottle certainly earned it an honorable mention alongside a top four result in the cleaning test.
