Porsche 911 Carrera 2S 2001

Find here the selection of the 10 best recommended used cars to own in the event that for some reason you decide to buy a vehicle on the used market.

People can have different reasons for buying a used car. Usually this is a lack of money to buy a new vehicle, but sometimes it happens that love for exotics or rarity gives rise to purchase. If you’re forced to buy something old, at least pick the best of what’s available. Here are the TOP 10 best used cars for ownership in the opinion of Autocar experts.

Porsche 911

TThe car manufacturer made this first water-cooled 911 with an internal designation of 996 from 1997 to 2006. It is currently the most affordable, but be prepared for technical flaws such as IMS shaft problems or cracked cylinder heads and liners. The automaker made it from 1997 to 2006.

Honda Insight

The first-generation Honda Insight hybrid-electric 2-door liftback offers an aerodynamic design (it’s narrower from back to front), covers and flat wheel covers over the rear wheels. Fuel economy of 83 mpg is achieved thanks to Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology.

After three generations, Honda will stop with the Insight: the model year 2022 is the final one for the model. A new Honda Civic hybrid will replace it. So the Insight will only be available on the secondary market.

BMW 5 Series (E39)

This is the fourth generation car produced from 1995 to 2004. You can buy it at an affordable price with petrol and diesel V6 and V8, an M5 is still a good choice. Experts consider this 5 Series to be the last truly repairable variant in an old-school garage. Possible flaws to fix include a plastic chain tensioner and a noisy Vanos (Variable Nockenwellensteuerung).

2003 MINI Cooper S

This is a good used hot hatchback for its value. You can choose a Chili Pack or a 2006 John Cooper Works, or an earlier conversion. Older cars will indeed have to be repaired, such as replacing dynamos, for example. Other issues to be prepared for are the rotten off-side rear end or the cranky electric power steering pump.

Volkswagen Golf R

Launched in 2014, the Mk7 Golf R 3- or 5-door is equipped with a powerful 2.0 TSI 296 hp turbo petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG.

Especially interesting is the 2014 Golf 2.0 TSI BlueMotion Tech R 4motion 3dr version. Later models are normally better. Possible problems include fluid leaks; the four-wheel drive needs attention every 20,000 miles.

Land Rover Defender

Older Land Rover Defenders with metal rims from the 90s have few advantages. They are far from modern comfort and technological progress. Nevertheless, their costs increase, especially if a vehicle is in good condition. From 2012, the Defenders offered significantly more conveniences.

When purchasing a used Defender, check for chassis and bulkhead rust, fluid leakage and transfer condition.

Jaguar XJ

People like to buy used Jaguar vehicles because of their beauty and status. The old-fashioned Jaguar XJ (from the X350) with its aluminum body embodies grace, space and speed. A diesel version with a fuel economy of 35 mpg is still a good choice.

A used car you bought may need new suspension, electronics, brakes and tires. When purchasing a Jaguar, don’t forget to check for rust.

Toyota Land Cruiser

This is an off-road king, a legend, rugged and reliable. Men don’t buy it because it’s trendy or stylish, but because it can do a great job on any terrain. The best choice is a diesel car. The older and simpler LC4 (2003-2009) is a choice if you want a workhorse.

Mazda MX-5

This is a used car cliché, a popular convertible fun to drive, inspired by classic roadsters from the 60’s. The car is highly valued both new and used. Previous owners treated the MX-5 mostly us.

Nevertheless, the used machine can have common wear and tear issues such as broken timing belt tensioners, worn suspension drop links or seized brake calipers.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123 and W124

This is the best example of sleek minimalist design. Because of their size and durability, the hardworking W123 and W124 sedans and estate cars that started the E-Class have filled various market segments – from passenger cars to taxis on European roads and special purpose vehicles.

Defects of old E-Class models can be related to gaskets and hydraulic valve lifters, tired suspension, a fried wiring harness and rust.
