China’s monthly registrations of locally made passenger cars (“PVs”) reached 1,874,644 units in July 2022, a 16% increase from the previous year, according to data collected by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute (“GARI”). It was the first time that the Chinese PV market saw a year-over-year increase in monthly registrations this year.
For the first half of 2022 (“H1 2022”), 8,866,479 locally built PVs were registered nationwide, down 11% from a year earlier, 5.22 percentage points lower than the decline in the volume of January to May.
As for the registrations of China-made PVs in June, the three main brands – Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda – all have two joint ventures in China. BYD ranks fourth, the highest among China’s native brands. With only all-electric PVs sold, Tesla was in eighth spot, indicating an uptick in performance compared to May, when the US brand failed to make the top 20 in the rankings. The three German luxury brands – Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz – occupy the 10th to 12th place.
As for the PV registrations for the first six months of 2022, the top 6 brands were the same as the June registrations ranking, all of which had more than 400,000 registered PVs. Geely was one spot higher than Nissan. Tesla ended the first half of the year with 198,221 Shanghai-made vehicles. The South Korean brand Hyundai registered the fewest vehicles in the top 20 brands.
Tesla’s Model Y was credited as the best-selling PV model in June, peaking at 739% from the previous month.
In addition to the Model Y, there were three more New Energy Vehicles (“NEV”) models in the top 20 models in June, including two BEVs (the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV and Model 3) and one PHEV (the BYD Song PLUS DM). -i). The highest-ranking oil-fired model was the Sylphy from the Nissan brand.
Five luxury models appeared on the top 20 model list, namely the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Audi A4L, the Audi Q5L and the BMW 5 Series. Yet none of them had a registration volume of more than 20,000 units in June.
For the Jan.-Jun. period, the top 20 PV models according to cumulative registrations all had more than 70,000 registered vehicles. The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV was the most popular model, while the Model Y took 4th place and was honored as the best-selling SUV. The Haval H6 was the best performing SUV model from a local Chinese brand. In addition, the Wuling Hongguang S was the highest MPV model.
In terms of regional vehicle distribution, Shanghai registered the most homemade PVs in June, selling the number two, Chengdu, with 14,264 units.
In the top 20 cities of June PV registrations, there were nine provincial capitals. Apart from Shanghai, metropolises like Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Tianjin were all in the top 20 cities list.
The title-winning city in H1 2022 PV registrations was Chengdu. Both Guangzhou and Beijing had registered more than 200,000 new PVs in the first six months. Affected by the resurgence of the epidemic, Shanghai was only ranked 4th from January to June. volume.
Despite the decline in total PV registrations, the NEV market in China still achieved a 111.45% year-over-year increase in H1 2022 registrations, reaching 2,090,047 units.
Notably, monthly registrations of domestically built new energy passenger vehicles (“NEPV”) hit a record high of 500,296 units in June, surpassing 500,000 units for the first time.
In powertrain solutions, battery electric vehicles (“BEV”) accounted for 80.38% of total NEPV registrations in June. Registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (“PHEV”) last month totaled 98,181 units, including 20,219 extended range electric vehicles (“REEVs”).
Of the NEPVs registered in H1 2022, 78.22% and 21.78%, respectively, were contributed by BEVs and PHEVs (including REEVs).
According to GARI data, 3 fuel cell passenger cars were registered in the first two quarters of this year.
In June NEPV registrations, BYD outperformed other brands by a significant lead. It had registered 130,131 NEPVs last month, which was even more than the sum of the runner-up (Tesla) and second runner-up (Wuling).
XPeng ranked highest among Chinese NEV startups in terms of NEPV registrations in June. Other key NEV innovators – Li Auto, NETA, NIO and Leapmotor – all made it into the top 20 brand list with more than 10,000 vehicles registered.
BYD’s leading presence in the Chinese NEV market was also reflected by its H1 2022 NEPV registrations. China’s native brands such as Wuling, Chery and Trumpchi (including AION) all made it into the top 5 brands in January-June. NEPV registrations.
With regard to June registrations, both the Model Y and Model 3 secured a place in the top 3 NEPV models. The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV dropped to second place with 41,516 registered units.
BYD had eight models in the top 20 NEPV model list by June registrations. The company’s rich product portfolio has greatly contributed to its leadership position in the NEV sector.
In terms of H1 2022 registrations, the affordable Wuling Hongguang MINIEV was crowned the best-selling NEPV model. In addition, four models from Chinese NEV startups – the Li ONE, the NETA V, the XPeng P7 and the Leapmotor T03 – made it to the top 20 NEPV model list.
Shanghai and Shenzhen were the only two cities whose NEPV registrations exceeded 20,000 units in June. Notably, NEVs accounted for up to 47% of Shanghai PV registrations in June.
In H1 2022, there were five cities with more than 60,000 registered NEPVs. Shenzhen and Shanghai also outperformed other cities with their January-June. registrations both exceed 80,000 units.
