According to Consumer Reports (via subscription), with the new 2022 Subaru Legacy sedan virtually nonexistent at retailers this year, CR says the 2017 Subaru Legacy is among the most reliable and economical sedans for shoppers this summer.

The 2017 Subaru Legacy is one of seven top sedans that are five years old. Consumer Reports says it’s reliable and economical, but they missed an important feature.

In addition to the 2017 Subaru Legacy, CR includes the Toyota Corolla (a small sedan), Mazda 6, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat and Toyota Avalon.

What is the Legacy Fuel Mileage?

CR says the Legacy gets a owner reported 27 mpg. The EPA’s fuel economy estimates for the 2017 Legacy are: 25/34 city/highway and 29 combined mpg.

What is the price of the Subaru Legacy 2017?

The price range of the 2017 Subaru Legacy is from $18,425 to $23,225 depending on trim level, mileage and condition.

Consumer Reports says: “The Legacy sedan offers a smooth, comfortable ride and good handling. It is also the cheapest mid-size four-wheel drive sedan on the market. All Subarus come standard with AWD (Subaru’s symmetrical four-wheel drive system) Forward Collision Warning and the automatic emergency brakes are part of an optional adaptive cruise control package.”

Consumer Reports says it’s reliable and economical, but they lack one of the most essential features of the midsize sedan; its safety rating.

The Legacy of 2017 earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ safety score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five star rating of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

New safety technology

New for the 2017 model year, Limited and Touring trim models are getting safer. The Legacy comes with automatic reverse braking, which detects objects when backing up, automatically triggers an alert and brakes the vehicle to avoid a collision. The upgraded headlights come with high beam assist and are standard on the 2017 Legacy models.

Legacy comes with Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist safety technology. EyeSight features six technologies to maximize passenger safety: Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Steering Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.

For 2017 there is a new Legacy 2.5i Sport

The new 2017 Subaru Legacy Sport 2.5i was a new trim level with a few exterior and interior style upgrades. The Legacy 2.5i Sport trim costs consumers $26,815. Outside, it features a dark gray grille, fog lamps with gloss black housings and a newly designed 18-inch. sporty wheels. Other upgrades to the Legacy Sport’s exterior styling include chrome accents on the rocker switches and high-gloss silver turn signals.

Inside, the Sport trim has a two-tone combination of gray and black fabric with blue stitching on the seats, door panels and steering wheel. It also comes with a carbon fiber pattern dashboard, door panel trim, piano black door switch panels and steering wheel switches.

You probably won’t find a 2022 Subaru Legacy sedan on retailers’ lots this summer, so check out the 2017 model year. Consumer Reports says it’s one of the seven most reliable and fuel-efficient mid-size sedans. We add that it is also one of the safest models you can buy.
