The second annual “Fill A Cruiser Food Drive” will take place Friday, July 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kona Costco parking lot.

A collaboration between the Kona Community Policing Section of the Hawai’i Police Department, Costco of Kona, the Food Basket Inc., and KAPA Radio personality Tommy Ching, the “Fill A Cruiser Food Drive” will help provide food to island residents in emergency.

Police will park a marked police cruiser in front of Costco where Costco members and the general public can donate non-perishable food items.

All donated food items are then distributed to the food basket, which will in turn provide it to residents of Hawai’i Island in need.

“During the Covid-19 lockdown, we really saw an increased need for food aid from our local community and kupuna,” said Kona Community Policing Officer Dwayne Sluss.

“The Kona Costco management and staff also realized the great need for this event and how it would positively help our community. With their help, we created the first “Fill A Cruiser Food Drive,” which was highly successful with people donating 4,053 pounds of food and $1,381.83 in food basket donations,” Sluss added.

He noted that while COVID restrictions have been relaxed, food insecurity among islanders has not.

“I hope everyone will take a little time and effort to come and donate to the food collection,” he said.
