Good Samaritans recognized for saving man from burning car in Mississauga

Five men are recognized as heroes after rescuing a man from a burning vehicle on a highway in Mississauga, captured in a dramatic video earlier this week.

Ben Sykes tells CP24 that he and his wife were driving the QEW in Mississauga on Monday when they saw a moving vehicle on fire that eventually crashed into a ditch near the Cawthra exit.

“I saw someone with a jack in hand, coming quickly to the vehicle and then hitting the window. So I guess at that point I felt like I had to help here. And so I jumped out of the car and, you know, did what I could to try and help right now,” he told CP24 on Thursday afternoon.

A video of the incident, tweeted by the OPP Wednesday night, shows smoke billowing from the stopped vehicle as five men tried to rescue the driver.

The OPP says the driver, a 36-year-old man from Toronto, experienced a medical episode during the incident.

The five men then sprang into action to free the unconscious man from the rapidly burning vehicle.

Sykes, who was wearing a white shirt in the video, is seen kicking the car window and elbows to try to free the man.

“…And then luckily there was this guy in a dump truck, whoever that was, he threw a hammer out the window and I realized, okay, we gotta get this thing,” Sykes said.

“And so I grabbed the hammer and smashed that window and we were able to get it open and just thankful that the timing worked the way it did, it was literally the nick of time.”

The men then removed the driver from the vehicle to get to safety.

Sykes says the rescue happened in the space of about 30 seconds before the vehicle caught fire.

The OPP says the driver was not injured and is alive today because of the men’s “heroic efforts”.

Sykes says he spoke to the driver yesterday.

“He is clearly grateful. I’m sure it’s all good for him. It’s emotional. It has been an emotional rollercoaster for me this week. I’m sure it’s been the same for him. So luckily he’s in good shape and we all ran away,” he said.

Sykes added that he went into “fight or flight” mode and just wanted to help a person in need.

“I think there are a lot of people who would do the same if they were in that situation. And all we can do is try to help other people and the world is a good place, despite all the things that are going on right now.”
