The Grand Theft Auto series has developed a knack for catching its main characters in a series of terrifying situations. The world of crime takes no prisoners, so the player must keep this fact in mind when dealing with potential employers. The stakes are high, so many protagonists long for a brief moment of normalcy. However, these moments are fleeting.
Multiple Grand Theft Auto entries will allow the player to pursue a relationship, but some love interests are more suitable than others. While many romantic connections are real, some of the ulterior motives and hidden agendas are dripping. A relationship that once offered escape can quickly drag the participants back into the world they hoped to distance themselves from, but some will allow the protagonist to lower their vigilance and harbor their true emotions.
8 Catalina – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Although Catalina’s first appearance presented her as the primary antagonist of GTA 3, San Andreas tried to convey a slightly more endearing side to her. CJ meets Catalina through her cousin Cesar and reluctantly begins a relationship with her in hopes of getting some money soon.
Their unusual bond leads them to carry out a series of heists and robberies, but CJ eventually grows tired of Catalina’s unpredictable temper and decides to end the relationship. Catalina starts a relationship with Claude, but will randomly call CJ to scold him as the plot progresses.
7 Maria Latore – Grand Theft Auto 3
Maria Latore meets the infamous Salvatore Leone while working as a waitress at Caligula’s Palace. She immediately bonds with the mob boss and decides to return to Liberty City to begin a relationship with him, but their time together shows how much of a mismatch they are.
After meeting Claude, Maria decides it’s time to escape. She flees to Staunton Island with Claude and her boyfriend Asuka before plotting the murder of her former lover. She spends most of the story referring to Claude as her “boyfriend,” but Claud’s mutism prevents him from reciprocating her feelings.
6 Denise Robinson – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Denise Robinson is first met by CJ during the “Burning Desire” mission, where he sets a Vagos building on fire. As the house burns, CJ hears screams from upstairs and rushes back inside to investigate the source.
Finally, he runs into Denise and tries to save her before the whole house goes up in flames. After rescuing her, CJ can ask Denise out. Unlike most of his potential partners, Denise considers a drive-by shooting as romantic as a candlelight dinner, making her one of CJ’s most suitable partners.
5 Karen Daniels – Grand Theft Auto 4
Niko meets Karen Daniels during the “Three’s a Crowd” mission, where he is tasked with driving her and her boyfriend, Mallorie, back to their flat. After they arrive at their destination, Karen will suggest that the two go on a date because she wants to “get to know” him.
Once the “First Date” mission is completed, Niko and Karen can go on different dates, but unfortunately their relationship is short-lived. Karen reveals during “The Snow Storm” that she was employed by the government to spy on Niko. Although their relationship felt real, Karen’s work forbids their love from really blossoming.
4 Tanisha Clinton – Grand Theft Auto 5
Before the start of GTA 5Franklin was romantically involved with a childhood friend named Tanisha, but their relationship broke down. After her brother’s death, Tanisha decided to distance himself from anyone involved in gangs, and Franklin was no exception.
Franklin spends the rest of the story trying to win her back, but Tanisha has no interest in returning to his side. She informs Franklin that she is getting married and although this news infuriates him at first, he eventually accepts it and wishes her well. The contract DLC in GTA Online revealed that Franklin and Tanisha got back together after the main story climax and have started a family ever since.
3 Kate McReary – Grand Theft Auto 4
Niko meets Kate McReary during Packie’s “Harboring a Grudge” mission. After completing this mission, Niko begins to work even more closely with the McReary family and then begins to develop feelings for Kate.
Although Kate has no love for Niko’s criminal lifestyle, she decides to start a relationship with him in the hope that her influence will distract him from the dangerous path he is walking. Her impact encourages Niko to step away from the world of crime and find a new purpose that doesn’t involve so much bloodshed.
2 Patricia Madrazo – Grand Theft Auto 5
Patricia Madrazo meets Trevor while working for her husband Martin, the leader of a Mexican-American drug cartel. Trevor demands payment after completing a job for the intimidating drug lord but receives none, so he decides to kidnap his wife to settle the score.
Trevor and Patricia begin to develop feelings for each other during their time together, but their romantic bond is broken when Martin demands that his wife return home. The two say goodbye, but continue their relationship for the rest of the story over text.
