Is the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV a Good EV? 6 things we like and 4 we don’t like | News

Technology is evolving rapidly in the electric vehicle world, with a major increase in range and efficiency just a few years ago. Amid these advancements, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV arrives as a new model based on the original Bolt EV, but it’s slightly larger and has slightly more passenger space.

Sharing the same 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with the smaller Bolt, the Bolt EUV lacks the charging flexibility, speed and range of more recently introduced EVs. That doesn’t mean the Bolt EUV isn’t a good vehicle. Its virtues include a spacious interior with a usable rear seat, easy handling and relatively friendly prices.

All of that makes the Bolt EUV an attractive option, especially for commuters and others who don’t need a huge range between charges. Add to that a fix for the battery-related recalls and a price cut for 2022, and the Bolt EUV looks like an even more compelling choice. Here are six things we like about the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV and four things we don’t like.

Things we like

1. Easy to live with

The Bolt EUV is just as simple and easy to drive as the Bolt EV; it also lacks the gimmicky controls of some competitors. Despite being bigger than its sibling, the Bolt EUV is still small enough for easy parking and maneuvering through traffic. These qualities helped both vehicles earn our Top Pick for Commuter EV award.

2. One Pedal Friendly

Driving with one pedal aids the efficiency of any EV, using the motor to slow down the car and recharge the battery as an alternative to pressing the brake pedal. The Bolt EUV system is activated via a physical button rather than a control buried in the touchscreen, making it better and easier to use than some competitors’ settings.

3. Super Cruiser

Chevrolet has made the Super Cruise semi-autonomous, hands-free driving system available for the Bolt EUV, something previously only available on more expensive models. While not as advanced as other vehicles that allow automated lane changes, the Bolt EUV system allows drivers to take a hands-free break for long distances on compatible highways.

4. Traditional operation

Unlike many EVs, the Bolt EUV’s controls are simple and don’t require a special learning curve. Many common functions use intuitive physical controls instead of the drivers having to navigate on a touchscreen while on the road. The shifter looks a bit odd though, but everything else has a traditional look and feel. A particularly useful feature is an easy-to-use, customizable instrument panel that can display not only the predicted range, but also the best and worst scenarios for the range, depending on conditions and other factors.

5. Simple touchscreen

Complementing the simple physical controls is a large 10.2-inch touchscreen, especially large for a vehicle of this size. Like the other controls of the Bolt EUV, it is intuitive, with simple menus, clear and sharp graphics and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; it also displays information about charging and efficiency.

6. Spacious backseat

For such a small vehicle, the Bolt EUV has a surprisingly roomy and comfortable rear seat – even on longer journeys. That adds to the appeal of commuters to the carpool crowd or to small families. Minor negatives include a window design that can make passengers feel enclosed and rear headrests that obscure the view behind the vehicle.

Things we don’t like

1. Charging Speed

The good news is that the Bolt EUV comes with a charging cord compatible with Level 1 or the faster Level 2 charging for home use. The bad news is that the fast charging capability is still following newer designs. The Bolt can be charged quickly at 55 kilowatts, which Chevrolet says can go up to 95 miles in 30 minutes. But that pales in comparison to some newer EVs that can go from 10% to 80% in that time or less.

2. Limited range

With other EVs that can routinely travel 300 miles or more on a charge, the Bolt EUV’s more limited range makes it more suitable for commuting. During our time with it, a journey that started with a range of 207 miles, ended up 170 miles from that range to cover just 141 miles. Granted, it was a cold and windy day, but the Bolt is better suited for low-speed trips than long highway cruises.
