Pokémon Scarlet and Violet keep teasing this weird new engine Pokémon

There’s a moment in The Pokémon Company’s new Pokemon Scarlet and purple trailer where I gasped and screamed: Mela, Team Star’s cool badgirl trainer, fights atop a sick Mad Max-looking car decked out with disco balls, pulsating speakers, and a big old stage. But there’s one part of the car that looks a little quirky: the colossal front engine has a dangling tongue.

Is it a Pokemon? Sure looks like it.

The Pokémon Company has been teasing this nameless Pokémon for a while now. The engine first appeared briefly in Scarlet and purple‘s August trailer, but it was conveniently omitted from press material – Fidough and Cetitan were the only new Pokémon to come out of that broadcast. The Pokémon Company sneaked the “engine Pokémon” into Wednesday’s trailer, but again, omitted it from new marketing material. Instead, three other Pokémon were described.

But if you look closely, The Pokémon Company has given us the best look at the potential new Pokémon, both in the trailer and in the accompanying artwork.

The Mad Max Pokémon car is pretty clearly detailed in the Scarlet and purple artwork at the top of this page: Mela stands on top of the stepped car, right above the shiny engine with a slobbering tongue. The tongue is new, which is perhaps a hint that this is no ordinary engine. It also has what looks like four legs – perhaps how it walks when not attached to a vehicle. The legs and tongue disappear in The Pokémon Company’s in-game screenshots, and it’s the Torkoal on the car’s platform that actually do the fight.

A few Pokémon gourmands have previously mentioned a motor Pokémon, suggesting it could be a Poison/Steel type.

Since The Pokémon Company hasn’t described this creature yet, we’re not sure – but there’s potential for the new engine Pokémon to work as Rotom. That Pokémon can “own” everyday devices like washing machines and lawnmowers, or work in more specialized ways to become a Pokédex/smartphone, bicycle, or drone – the latter group you can’t fight.

It brings a lot of interesting potential to Team Star battles; perhaps the new engine Pokemon can attack in battle alongside any Pokemon that is “officially” out, as it powers the sick car. But whatever the engine-inspired Pokémon turns out to be, it will be a theme suitable for Pokemon Scarlet and purplewhich includes multiple vehicle-like Pokémon that trainers can ride on, including Cyclizar, and new Legendaries Koraidon and Miraidon, which can turn into motorcycles.
