The unnamed man lost control of the wheel and then dove into the water before climbing out the window and clambering onto the roof of his Chevrolet Orlando.

At one point, he is seen talking to another elderly man walking along the canal who appears to be giving advice to the stranded retiree.

After a few minutes, the brave retiree gathers his courage to jump onto the grassy bank before the fire brigade arrives to tow the car away.

The video has since been viewed more than 540,000 times.

Police spokeswoman Magdalena Ciska sad: “After 3 p.m [on May 2] we received a report that on St. Wojciech Street, a 62-year-old man driving a Chevrolet towards Pruszcz Gdański, did not adapt his speed to the road conditions, lost control of the vehicle and entered the Radunia Canal.

The car was later towed out of the water by the fire service and the man was fined PLN 3,000.police equipment

“The man managed to come ashore under his own power. He was examined by rescuers and was not injured. He was sober.”

The man was fined 3,000 PLN (680 euros).
