Switch car insurance in the meantime, shop for the best rates

Buying car insurance is like any other important item – it’s a good idea to shop around. There are a few things to know when looking for the right policy for you, especially if you need to make a change.

What you need to know about changing your car insurance policy

We’ve told you about ways you can try to save money on your auto insurance by allowing companies to track your driving with an app. Tracking your driving may qualify you for lower rates and may mean switching to a new company.

Q: Are there penalties for changing auto insurance companies in the middle?

Answer: New. The Texas Department of Insurance explains: that you have the right to cancel your policy at any time. You should get the remaining premium back.

The refund will be paid to *you* unless you used a finance company to pay for your insurance. In that case, the repayment will be paid to that company and the amount will be deducted from what you owe on your loan. Please note that if an insurance company wishes to cancel your policy, they must send an email notification at least 10 days prior to the cancellation. Your specific policy may provide even more notice.

Did you know that insurance companies check your claim history?

Most insurance companies use the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) to learn your claims history. This includes the date, type and loss of claims. A company may charge you more or refuse to sell you a policy based on the information in your CLUE report. You can get a free copy of your report every year. Call LexisNexis at 866-312-8076.

Find discounts for car insurance

When shopping around for insurance, you often need to check for potential discounts you may be able to get on your auto insurance policy. Now, for example, if you work remotely, you can get a ‘low mileage’ discount. Other common discounts include driver training or defensive driving, good student grades, and good driving.

You should also have the choice to choose a repair shop

There are other rights that you may not be aware of when it comes to auto insurance in Texas. The TDI website states that when it comes to using your car insurance after an accident, you have the right to repair shop and replacement partts for your vehicle. An insurance company may not specify the make, type, species, age, seller, supplier or condition of parts or products used to repair your vehicle. Researcher Joel Eisenbaum researched auto parts shortages last year and this is still the case for many dealers, so you may want to ask specific questions about auto parts and how the repair shop plans to fix your vehicle.
