Taking advantage of ADAS services and calibration, not just about the targets

Frank Terlep recommends a properly outfitted ADAS services and calibration business facility should ensure all calibration procedures are performed indoors without obstructions or uneven surface shadows.

Industry statistics show that by 2025, nearly 50% of the North American vehicle fleet will be equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS). By 2030, the percentage of vehicles with ADAS will exceed 75%.

With the overwhelming growth in this area, Frank Terlepco-founder of Auto TechceleratorsThe collision recovery facilities mentioned are currently facing many challenges in performing ADAS services and calibrations.

The first is the location. Based on industry data, Terlep said 80% of bodyshops don’t have the space they need to perform these services. They also need a business operating system, trained personnel and equipment, including aiming systems, diagnostic tools, alignment systems, vehicle lifts and more.

One of the biggest challenges is identifying a vehicle’s ADAS technologies and the calibrations required, which Terlep says most stores do poorly.

He shared a finding from February of Honda which identified 80% of the reviews processed through CCC intelligent solutions that required a calibration did not contain a line item related to calibration.

During a recent webinar sponsored by Auto Techcelerators, Terlep shared some of what he believes are the requirements to run a well-equipped ADAS service and calibration business.

Founded in 2019, Auto Techcelerators helps the automotive, collision, glass, insurance and truck industries correctly estimate, calibrate and validate ADAS systems, repairs and calibrations. The company’s Test Drive CoPilot™ platform was chosen as one of 15 semi-finalist solutions in the 10th annual Special Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Annual Launch Pad Competition.

The facility

For businesses looking to perform 10 or more calibrations or ADAS repairs per day, Terlep advised facilities to allocate a minimum of 4,000 square feet.

“If you want to get calibrations right, you can’t do them in a parking lot, under a tree, or in an area where there isn’t enough room to keep targets at the correct distance,” he explained.
