Tesla Model Y will be the world's best-selling vehicle, says Musk

Elon Musk claims the Tesla Model Y would become the best-selling car in the world next year. That award currently goes to the Toyota Corolla.

Elon Musk has claimed that the Tesla Model Y is on track to become the world’s best-selling car next year, and not just among EVs. Along with the Model 3, the Model Y is one of two “affordable” Teslas for sale. It is a compact crossover that was originally unveiled in March 2019 before going into production the following year. The Model Y is based on the Model 3 and shares most parts with the sedan, including the interior design and powertrain. However, it also offers optional third row seats for a capacity of seven passengers.

Tesla is one of the leading electric vehicle companies in the world, selling more than 936,000 cars last year. The company offers four models as part of its portfolio, including the flagship Model S and Model X, in addition to the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y. Until recently, the company held the number one position in the industry worldwide, but the Chinese auto giant BYD surpassed it earlier this year to become the world’s largest EV manufacturer. Tesla recently announced that it has delivered more than 250,000 vehicles in the second quarter of this year as electric car sales continue to soar amid rising gas prices and growing environmental concerns.

At Tesla’s Annual Shareholder Meeting This Week, Musk claimed Tesla Model Y will become the world’s best-selling vehicle in terms of sales this year. He also added that the car will become the best-selling vehicle worldwide by volume by the end of next year. To achieve that goal, Musk said Tesla is ramping up production at Gigafactory Texas and Gigafactory Berlin. He also said Tesla aims to produce at least two million cars by next year as the next step toward its long-term goal of building 20 million vehicles a year.

It’s worth noting that Musk wasn’t talking about the Model Y becoming the best-selling EV in the world, but the best-selling vehicle in the entire auto industry in general. According to statistic, the best-selling car in the world last year was the Toyota Corolla, which sold more than 1.1 million units in 2021. the report. However, if Musk’s claim is anything, Model Y’s sales must have surpassed those of Model 3 in the past year.

Tesla doesn’t disclose the exact sales numbers of its vehicles, so it’s hard to say how many Model Y units the company is selling right now. However, according to InsideEVsTesla’s Fremont, California plant has installed capacity to produce up to 600,000 Model 3/Model Y units per year, while Giga Shanghai has the potential to produce more than 450,000 Model 3/Model Y units per year. In addition, Giga Berlin began production of the Model Y earlier this year, while Giga Texas exclusively produces the Model Y. So it shouldn’t be a big surprise if Tesla will sell more than a million Model Y units next year, surpassing the Toyota Corolla.
