Tesla's Entire Existing Vehicle Lineup Makes U.S. EV Top 10 Rankings

Despite the ongoing shortage of semiconductors, electric vehicles are gaining ground in the United States. Financial firm data Experian indicates that the number of EV registrations in the United States increased by 60% in the first quarter of 2022.

During the first quarter of 2022, EV registrations reached 158,689 units, taking a record 4.6% of the total light vehicle market. This is despite the fact that the total number of vehicle registrations fell by 18% in the first quarter to 3.4 million units.

Tesla, the leader in electric vehicles, took the lead in the US EV segment, with all four existing vehicle offerings taking a place in the EV Top 10 list. Tesla recorded a total of 113,882 registrations in the first quarter Automotive Newswhich represented a gain of 59% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

The individual numbers of Tesla’s existing lineup are very impressive. The Model Y crossover, a vehicle CEO Elon Musk expects could be the world’s best-selling car, saw a total of 52,051 registrations in the first quarter of 2022. Its mid-sized sedan sibling, the Model 3, saw a total of 47,682 registrations over the same period. †

This effectively made the Model Y and the Model 3 the top 2 best-selling EVs in the US. The Model S finished in third place with 9,250 registrations, while the Model X was seventh with 4,899 registrations. Although they had significantly fewer registrations than the Model 3 and Model Y, the results of the Model S and Model X were still impressive as they outperformed much cheaper competitors.

For example, the Ford Mustang Mach-E took fourth place with 6,957 registrations, placing it behind the much more expensive Model S. The Volkswagen ID.4, on the other hand, recorded only 2,926 registrations, far behind the much more expensive Model X.

Interestingly, General Motors, billed by the Biden administration as one of the leaders in the EV movement, saw only a conservative number of electric vehicle registrations in Q1 2022. Chevrolet had only 479 EV registrations for the Bolt EV and EUV, and the GMC Hummer EV saw just 80 registrations in the first quarter of 2022.
