Road trips have a very classic appeal. The open road, with some tunes, beautiful views and exploring new places. That’s the to liveis it not?
However, the new era of road trips promises to be something different than before. Petrol and diesel cars are quickly falling out of favor and electric vehicles (EVs) are on the rise. That means your future road trips will increasingly be defined by places with enough charging points to keep everything on track.
If you’re ahead of the curve and already own an electric car – or want to rent one for a road trip – you’ll want to check this out: car rental company Hertz has compiled a list of the top 10 road trips in Europe for electric cars.
The company has ranked a number of routes by the number of EV charging points per mile so motorists don’t have to worry about running out of juice in the middle of nowhere — the phenomenon known as “range anxiety.”
At the top of Hertz’s list is a tour through the Netherlands. The route starts and ends in Amsterdam and visits The Hague, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht, among others, with windmills and dikes in abundance. Importantly, though, the tour includes 2,559 EV chargers along the way, which equates to a whopping 14.6 chargers per mile. You will literally never be unable to recharge.
The Dutch route is way ahead of all the other rides on the list, but it’s impressive how many touring rides with lots of charging points. Second, there is a route in northern Italy that goes from Turin and Milan to Lake Como and Lake Iseo, with 596 chargers (4.73 per mile), and third is a drive from Cannes-Monaco on the French Riviera with 138 EV chargers – or 4.06 per kilometer.
It’s worth noting that even the road trip routes with a lower number of EV charging stations are still there. For example, routes in the French Alps and Catalonia still have an average charge point every other mile.
Here’s Hertz’s full top ten of the best EV road trips in Europe, in addition to the number of charge points per mile.
