As gas prices continue to rise in the US, finding a fuel-efficient car is essential. Lower fuel consumption for commuting, longer journeys or daily shopping is a must. Toyota has built a reputation for affordable, fuel-efficient sedans and SUVs. Many can give you some of the best fuel economy figures on the market. Here is a list of the ten best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy.
1. Toyota Prius Prime (54mpg)
The Toyota Prius has long been one of the most popular hybrid cars on the market. It is known as an affordable, economical daily commute.
The Prime model is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It is slower than the standard Prius and has less interior space due to a larger battery. But it has a more luxurious interior, a bigger battery and better range and better fuel economy. That’s why TrueCar named it the fourth best car of 2022 when it comes to gas mileage, thanks to that 54 mpg fuel economy.
2. Toyota Camry Hybrid LE (53mpg)
Second on the list of the best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy is another hybrid, the Camry Hybrid LE. The LE trim is the base model for the Camry and has the best highway fuel economy of the 53 mpg trims. Edmunds taps the LE as the recommended trim for the 2022 Toyota Camry. TrueCar ranks it third best for gas mileage in midsize cars.
3. Toyota Prius Eco (53mpg)
The Prius’ Eco trim shines as one of the best Toyota cars in terms of fuel economy. It’s better in the city with a 58 mpg rating, but the 53 mpg highway still puts it close to the top of this ranking.
While it may be less than some of the options on other Prius trim levels, the Prius Eco still comes with plenty of safety features and technology like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility.
4. Toyota Corolla Hybrid (52mpg)
Toyota’s compact sedan, the Corolla, also has a hybrid option with excellent highway fuel economy. The Corolla Hybrid takes the same hybrid powertrain of a Prius, but places it in the four-door Corolla platform.
Its size reduces payload, but highway fuel economy is one of the best you can get in a new Toyota.
5. Toyota Prius (50mpg)
The Prius Eco trim is one of the most efficient hybrids on the market. But most other Prius trims, the XLE, LE, Limited and Nightshade, all average 50 mpg for highway fuel economy. City fuel economy is even better at 54 mpg, but the highway numbers help the Prius come in second TrueCar‘s list of the best compact cars for gas mileage. There are three other Prius trim levels: the four-wheel drive XLE, Limited and Nightshade. They are all rated at 47 mpg highway.
6. Toyota Camry Hybrid (47mpg)
The Camry Hybrid LE trim is one of the most fuel efficient Toyota cars on the road. The other Camry Hybrid trims – the SE, XLE, SE Nightshade and XSE – all have great marks for highway fuel economy of 47 mpg.
The other finishes share the same hybrid powertrain and add additional benefits such as sporty styling in the SE, leather trim in the XLE, black trim in the SE Nightshade, larger wheels and lower profile tires in the XSE.
7. Toyota Avalon Hybrid XLE (44mpg)
Like the Prius, one of the best Toyota cars for highway fuel economy comes in a custom trim. Toyota’s full-size sedan – the Avalon – comes with a hybrid powertrain similar to the one in the Camry Hybrid. It’s longer, wider and heavier than the Camry, with a more luxurious interior.
8. Toyota Avalon Hybrid (43mpg)
The XLE is the most efficient Avalon trim, but the other two trims, the XSE and Limited, also have good fuel economy on the highway. The XSE has a sportier styling with bigger wheels and technology such as a sunroof and wireless charging. The Limited has an upgraded interior, heated seats, wood trim and additional driver aids. Because of these extra options, the cars are slightly heavier and less economical than the XLE version.
9. Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE (41mpg)
The Corolla Hatchback is the best Toyota non-hybrid car for highway fuel economy, but only in SE trim with an automatic transmission. The Corolla Hatchback’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder inline engine shines on the highway compared to the city at 32 mpg. With the SE trim, you won’t miss out on the standard equipment. It still comes with plenty of features such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 driver assistance system.
10. Toyota RAV4 Prime (38mpg)
The best Toyota SUV for highway fuel economy is the RAV4 Prime. Like the Prius Prime, the RAV4 Prime is a PHEV. It has more power than the RAV4 Hybrid with a larger battery. Overall, it makes 302 horsepower with an electric range of 42 miles. It is the fastest RAV4 model, reaching 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and the best for highway fuel economy.
