The Toyota Camry is the best-selling car for Q1 of 2022? I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you. Except, not at all. Because the Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in the US for 19 years and shows no signs of slowing down. Find out why the Camry continues to sell during unprecedented times of automotive chaos.
America’s best-selling passenger car
Now it’s important to note that when we say the Camry is the best-selling car, we mean car – this excludes trucks and SUVs. Americans love our giant, “But what if I… need 80 cubic feet of cargo space” vehicles. They guzzle gas, they’re hard to park, but we love them. That’s why the real powerhouses in auto sales are the heavy hitters.
But among passenger cars, the 2022 Toyota Camry reigns supreme.
So far, in 2022, the Camry has moved 61,505 units. That’s far less than the 140,701 Ford F-150 Series units sold, but it’s incredibly impressive for the sedan market right now. Even with rising gas prices, trucks remain a top seller. But small cars like the Camry will always be needed, wanted and loved.

Camry sales fell 21% but remain strong
Car and driver reports that sales of the Camry are down 21%, but even that massive dip saw the Camry significantly ahead of the second best-selling car: the Corolla.
According to HotCarsToyota sold 313,795 Camry sedans in 2021, a 7% increase from last year. With numbers like that, it’s not hard to see why the Camry is now seeing a dip. Most new cars are more expensive than usual, which can put off budget buyers who would normally be happy to buy a Camry.
That, coupled with inventory shortages and difficulty accessing inventory, can take a big bite out of sales.

The 2022 Camry sold the Corolla with over 14K cars
Who doesn’t love a little sibling rivalry? The Toyota Corolla was the second best-selling car, with 47,501 units in the first quarter of 2022. That’s just over 75% of total Toyota Camry sales.
One reason for the sales difference may be size: Americans generally prefer larger cars, and the mid-sized Camry offers more passenger and luggage space than the compact Corolla.
The Camry sold the 2022 Honda Accord with nearly 20K cars
The rivalry between the Honda Accord vs. Toyota Camry is still very much alive. Critics may generally favor the accord, but the public vote with their wallets – and the Camry comes out on top. The Honda Accord sold 42,039 units for the first quarter of 2022. That’s just 68% of Toyota Camry’s total sales.
Honda has struggled with delivery issues for months, and it’s not just the Accord that has taken a hit in sales. The Civic has also seen a massive drop in sales in the past year.
Why is the 2022 Camry a bestseller?
There’s a good reason — well, more than a dozen good reasons — that the Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car for nearly two decades.
The 2022 Toyota Camry is cheap and cheerful, starting at just $25,295 for the base Camry LE model. It is long lasting and reliable, and while it may not be very exciting, you get exactly what you need.
