DeTomaso Sports 5000 Spyder

DeTomaso Sport 5000 was known as a race sports car† Unfortunately, production stopped right after the first sample. Of the 49 cars considered, only one of the car was eventually put into production. Roberto Bussinello, DeTomaso’s test and development driver, drove the Sport 5000 in the Mugello 500 km race on 17 July 1966. This would be the only Sports 5000 appearance in a competition.

Other names for De Tomaso Sport 5000 are Ghia DeTomaso, De Tomaso 70P and De Tomaso P70.

The single-seater racer was built in 1965 by De Tomaso and designed by Pete Brock. It was headlined on the Road and Track cover issue and was discussed in a March 1966 article. It was developed by Peter Brock and Medardo Fantuzzi in the Fantuzzi workshop.

DeTomaso Automobili: an overview of the company

In 1958 De Tomaso launched his company, DeTomaso Automotive, in Modena in 1959. He produced his first road car, the Vallelunga, with De Tomaso’s signature advanced lightweight chassis. Vallelunga’s design was great and beautiful, apart from the small and underpowered 4-cylinder Ford engine it had, which prevented it from performing very well as a functional sports car. It was fitted with an American V8 engine and De Tomaso saw to it that the backbone chassis was redesigned to provide adequate support for the new engine.

The Tomaso was made locally in Italy by some blacksmiths, but the result was unsatisfactory, so Shelby asked Brock to recreate it with Medardo Fantuzzi. They made the Tomaso with movable rear wings and full doors. While Shelby funded the project, De Tomaso was the automotive engineer, Peter Brock the designer, and Carrozzeria Fantuzzi the manufacturer.

However, Shelby did not wait to finish the project with Fantuzzi and went for another project, the Ford GT40. After that, De Tomaso completed the project with Ghia. Hence the name Ghia DeTomaso.

Construction of the car was completed on September 3. Ghia logos are still mounted on the body to this day, even though it was built by Fantauzzi. The sport 5000 was driven with the Ferrari 250LMin on a hill, but was unable to complete the race.

Hinged to the chassis of a Vallelunga with minor changes, it was packaged in Fantuzzi’s workshop for about 40 years until it reappeared in public after De Tomaso’s death in 2004.

Matted with a Ford V8 engine type made of aluminum alloy and a cast iron block, the engine works with 4 Weber carburettors rated at 469 hp at 7300 rpm and two valve cylinders.

A steel chassis was used as the backbone for the aluminum double wishbone body. There are two wishbones, coil springs above cylindrical dampers on the front wheels, then top links, double trailing, inverted lower wishbones, arms and coil springs above the cylindrical dampers. The car also uses a five-speed manual transmission.

The car weighs approximately 1455 lbs and is approximately 408 cm long and 177 cm wide. Its performance figure from power to weight is 0.72 bho/kg.

The best features of the 1965 De Tomaso Sport 5000 Spyder

The Tomaso sports 5000 has an Italian design with a strong American engine. The compact engine delivered 475 hp at 7,300 rpm on a Colotti-inspired 5-speed transmission.

A sleek portable car with a huge rear wing controlled by the driver for different aerodynamics and large doors made it suitable for GT racing. It is a right-hand drive that gives the driver a better view when seeing vehicles in front. It has a higher windshield and full doors like Brock’s beautiful design.

The overly adjustable rear wings provide signature handling and downforce.

The Sport 5000 was sold to an American collector in 2005 by a previous Belgian collector after being sold from De Tomaso’s estate.

The only produced De Tomaso Sport 5000 was never renewed; it is still in its original condition as a 289/475 horsepower small block with a DeTomaso built Colotti style gearbox. It also still carries the original Fantuzzi-made, Brock-designed bodywork, red paint and appearance.
