What you get from this article is a genuine assessment of what the new Trailblazer has to offer in terms of safety, powertrain, technology, luxury, comfort, efficiency and cost. We’ll do that while giving you a look at how Trailblazer’s closest competitors compare. By the time we’re done, you’ll know for sure if the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer is the small SUV you’re looking for or not.
Agree. A brief introduction to the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer.
The most obvious feature of the Trailblazer is the front end of the Camaro. Under the skin is a 1.3L turbocharged engine and three driving modes to give the driver more control in different driving conditions.
As compact SUVs go, the 2022 Trailblazer is extra small. The small SUV vehicle nestles between Chevrolets Trax and Equinox. So this Trailblazer is a very small sub-compact, but it offers great performance and loads of advanced features, making it the same price as even bigger crossovers.
An Overview of the Chevy Trailblazer Specs for 2022
It comes in four trim levels: LS, LT, Activ and RS, all with different features and feature sets. As mentioned, Trailblazer is right in between Trax and Equinox, smaller than the latter and a significant improvement over the former.
Trailblazer was briefly discontinued in 2008 and resumed production in 2012 as the subcompact market gained momentum. The Trailblazer 2022 is certainly not the best subcompact crossover SUV money can buy, but it does what it can extremely well. In terms of reliability, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer scored an impressive 83 out of 100 in JDPower’s Predicted Confidence Score† JDPower is a world-renowned independent, unbiased consumer analytics company.
Chevy Equinox, Kia Sportage 2022, Mazda CX-30 2021, Buick Encore GX 2021 and Hyundai Kona 2021 are some SUVs in the Trailblazer class. Trailblazer bears a striking resemblance to Equinox with some people asking if the plan is to replace Equinox with Trailblazer. If that happens, GM had better build the best of both worlds in one replacement vehicle.
2022 Equinox is slightly taller and 10 inches longer than the 2022 Trailblazer, but the latter offers better fuel economy. The difference in size translates into towing capacity, horsepower and torque. Equinox offers more horsepower and torque while having a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs compared to Trailblazer’s 1000 lbs.
On the other hand, the Trailblazer offers more interior space, legroom and cargo space than the Chevrolet Trax. Chevy’s description of the Trailblazer 2022 as a “small SUV with a big horizon” is not exaggerated. With up to 174 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, the small crossover does a good job of hauling cargo.
It offers two engine options; 1.2L and 1.3L ECOTEC turbo engines. The former is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and comes standard on the front-wheel drive LS and LT models. It can deliver what appears to be a subpar 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. You can also expect mpg from 29 cities and mpg from 32 highways; comparable fuel consumption.
Capable of 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, the 1.3L 3-cylinder engine comes standard on Trailblazer’s four-wheel drivetrains, including the LS and LT trim levels. However, the 1.3L is standard on front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive ACTIV and RS trim levels. An LT trim on the front wheel also gets the 1.3L as an available option. This engine effortlessly delivers 29-city mpg and 33-highway mpg.
What are the standout features of the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
The Trailblazer 2022 is smaller than most of its sizes, but it has other substantial standout features to seriously drool over. Trailblazer has an array of technology and safety features, more than you’re likely to find among its competitors.
For starters, Chevy’s Safety Assist bundle includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Departure Warning, Follow Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert and IntelliBeam®.
Other technical and safety features include rear parking assist, rear intersection warning, lane change warning with side blind spot warning, 7 or 8″ infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay® / Android Auto™ compatibility, wireless charging and adaptive cruise control. You can also look out for a premium seven-speaker Bose sound system, HD rear view camera and an enhanced 4.2-inch multi-colour Driver Information Center.
The drool becomes more intense if you opt for the RS Activ trim. This gives you an 8 inch instead of a 7 inch touchscreen. But that’s just the icing on the cake. The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer Activ is built for off-road compatibility. That means bigger wheels (18 inches) with Korean-made Hankook tires, greater ground clearance and skid plates underneath.
Another thing we don’t think you can get anywhere else is the 2-wheel, front-wheel and AWD select modes available in the same Activ trim. Know another small SUV that gives you that freedom? The other Trailblazer trim levels offer a CVT transmission, but the RS Activ offers a sweet 9-speed automatic transmission.
We’d love to talk about how comfortable it is in the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer, but we’ll do this with caution. Well, if you’re only 65.7 inches tall, you don’t really have much room there, and that’s a fact. But again, this is a small SUV, remember.
At the end of the day, Trailblazer offers decent seating and cargo space for such a small crossover. In fact, Trailblazer has broken new ground in this area. The Activ trim comes with a fold-down front passenger seat to accommodate even more luggage. A long load such as a six-foot ladder or a kayak could fit in the pioneers well, enabling them to live up to utility status.
Should You Buy the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
If you need an affordable compact SUV that delivers excellent urban transportation for driver and passengers, you couldn’t do worse with the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. In fact, with a starting price of $21,600, it is the most affordable and cost-effective among its comrades in the sub-compact arena.
The Kia Sportage 2022 is one of Trailblazer’s strongest competitors. Sportage offers similar, but not as much or as advanced technologies and safety features as in the Trailblazer. However, if power and speed are your bread and butter, go for the 2022 Kia Sportage with its 2.0L 240hp engine, as long as you don’t mind sacrificing fuel economy on the altar of horsepower. Sportage soars 23/29 mpg against Trailblazer’s 29/33 mpg.
Trailblazer also beats Hyundai Kona in terms of gas mileage. Although Kona has a lower starting price of $19,899, Trailblazer still outperforms in cost efficiency by offering a more expensive finish with a cheaper price tag than Kona. Again, Kona is faster, with a bigger engine and less fuel consumption.
If you can ignore the not-so-great engine specs, the 2022 Trailblazer offers a lot more goodies than most subcompacts. The Activ trim no longer has a monopoly on the heated steering wheel; the LT trim gets that option too.
Want some cons? Well, the Activ model we love so much has twin but deceptive exhausts. Yes, they look bigger from the outside, but narrow when they go in. We also noticed a bit of turbo lag, but that didn’t matter much compared to how easy it is to park the Trailblazer, plus all that huge stockpile of high-end tech features.
