There are cars that aren’t expensive, and then there are cars that deliver great performance. Rarely do the two meet, but Japanese automaker Mazda has made a habit of making cars that have both highly desirable qualities.

From the cheerful MX-5 Miata sports car to the family-friendly three-row CX-9 SUV, the Japanese automaker offers a stunning lineup.

When Mazda split from Ford to partner with Isuzu, the result was the all-new BT-50, which debuted in the second half of 2020, a few months after its D-Max sibling. The Mazda BT-50 shares mechanical components with the Isuzu D-Max, just as the next Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok will.

The 2022 Mazda BT-50 range offers two variants, the XS and the SP. The Mazda BT-50 has recently been added to the list of duty-free leisure vehicles, including the Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max.

The 2022 Mazda BT-50 has an outgoing-looking exterior

One of the most attractive pickups on the market is the Mazda BT-50. There are no aesthetic clues to the Isuzu heritage. The distinctive Mazda Kodo styling, along with solid crossover elements seen in the Mazda CX-9, give the BT-50 a premium look that sets it apart from other pickup vehicles.

The large radiator grille is simple yet effective, with its signature wings flowing neatly into the small LED headlights. Compared to other pickups, the Mazda BT-50 does not have black bodywork, which adds to the pickup’s luxurious look.

Simple light units on the body and a color-coded rear bumper with an integrated auxiliary step for easy access to the cargo bed describe the look at the rear. The Mazda BT-50 lacks the Mazda characteristic lighting look due to the vertical placement of the rear lights.

The BT 50 is a five star vehicle. The BT-50 has not been crash tested and most likely will not be. ANCAP sees no need, as it has determined that the Isuzu D-Max ratings also apply to its sister.

The Mazda BT-50 from 2022 comes standard with a complete safety package. The most important part is the autonomous emergency braking system.

It consists of pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind spot monitoring, various forms of lane departure warning, accident prevention, rear crossing warning, rollover protection and a secondary collision function that applies the brakes when the airbag sensors detect a collision.

A rear view camera and parking sensors are also included in the safety package, but front sensors won’t be installed until they’re upgraded to the GT.

LED headlights are standard on all models, as are driver’s front, curtain, center and knee airbags.

On the previous models of the BT 50, switch off lane assist functions was busy. But now, in the 2022 BT 50, a button on the steering wheel makes it easier to disable lane-keeping systems.

The interior of the Mazda BT-50 from 2022 is a completely different car

Both Mazda and Isuzu have put a lot of effort and resources into ensuring that the cabin does not resemble a pickup truck, but rather a global premium crossover or SUV. Mazda’s designers were given the freedom to redesign the primary dashboard display, making it look smoother and more horizontal with less aesthetic lines.

The dashboard of the Mazda BT-50 is a beautiful, soft-lined panel with full-length double stitching in a two-tone color scheme. The vent surrounds, steering wheel, gear lever and door handles all have a satin silver finish.

The kneepads and lower console trim are lined with double stitching and wrapped in a soft-touch fabric. This makes the Mazda BT-50 look even more luxurious than German cars.

Due to its immense size, the Mazda BT-50 has a lot of head and legroom on the inside. All seats are also very comfortable for adults. There is also a front passenger and standard glove box below, an overhead sunglasses holder and an armrest console box for the occupants.

The driver’s seat of the Mazda BT-50 has an 8-way electrically adjustable and lumbar support.

The rear seat is split 60-40, with two storage compartments under the seats. The Mazda BT-50 has grab bars on the B-pillar to help those with smaller frames get into the rear seats.

The Mazda BT-50 has a 9-inch infotainment screen, one of the largest in the industry. It includes smartphone communication with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Large icons and responsive tactile feedback make it easy to use.

Thanks to physical buttons such as home and volume, the system is also extremely user-friendly.

For audio, it uses an eight-speaker system and two ceiling-mounted speakers for added efficiency.
