September was the second month of consecutive growth for the new car market. According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), registrations grew 4.6 percent compared to the same period in 2021, with electric vehicles posting significant gains.
The top 10 best-sellers list also went through some significant changes, with some new entries punctuating the lineup of usual suspects. Let’s see.
Nissan Qashqai – 9,311
It was a big month for the Nissan Qashqai, which came out on top. The latest generation of the popular crossover has appeared, with the redesigned model bringing a significant increase in efficiency, space and technology.
It will probably become even more popular as the months go by and the supply starts to pile up.
Tesla Model Y – 8.315
Tesla’s new Model Y took silver in September. Based on the popular Model 3, the Model Y has a more upright stance that gives it more of a crossover-like feel. Featuring the latest technology from Tesla, it is one of the most futuristic electric vehicles currently on sale.
Additionally, Tesla ownership gives access to the company’s widespread and fast Supercharger network.
Volkswagen Polo – 6.476
Volkswagen’s ever-popular Polo came in third in September, with this recently updated model’s spacious interior and healthy standard equipment appealing to buyers. Available with a number of engine choices, the Polo remains a good choice for many drivers.
It also keeps its industry-leading GTI version for buyers who want a faster option.
Ford Puma – 5.799
The Puma has had a really strong 2022, with this funky looking Ford crossover consistently outperforming the rest of the Blue Oval’s offerings. Taking advantage of the craze for high-riding models, the Puma may be based on the Fiesta but offers a slightly higher view of the road ahead.
It is also available in the sporty ST form, with a surprisingly punchy 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.
Kia Sportage – 5,107
The Kia Sportage is a constant fixture in the top 10 list, with this well-specified and good-looking SUV offering acres of space and a range of efficient engines. A recent update has also taken the Sportage’s exterior design to the next level, while increasing the amount of standard equipment it offers.
As before, the Sportage is still accompanied by Kia’s attractive seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty.
Ford Fiesta – 4,570
While the Puma has continued to dominate Ford’s sales, it hasn’t stopped the Fiesta from appearing in this month’s top 10. Though hampered by delivery restrictions, Ford’s iconic Fiesta remains an excellent choice for many motorists due to its low running costs.
It’s also surprisingly roomy and drives well, whichever variant you choose.
Ford Kuga – 4.520
September has proven to be a very successful month for Ford, with the Kuga putting the finishing touches to three of its best-seller entries. It is one of Ford’s flagship SUVs and offers the value for money the company is known for, in addition to a practical and well-made interior.
The recent addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain has also boosted the efficiency of the Kuga.
Kia Niro – 3,861
Kia’s latest Niro has hit the scene, taking the same three-pronged approach to powertrains as its predecessor, with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric configurations all on offer. The full EV is especially impressive thanks to its 288-mile range and fast charge time.
The all-electric Niro also happens to have the largest boot of the three.
Hyundai Tucson – 3.776
Hyundai’s Tucson has fallen from the third place it took in August, although sales have risen significantly from the 1,739 units registered during the last month of summer.
Cleverly styled and with plenty of storage space, the Tucson’s integration of hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines also makes it an efficient choice.
Volkswagen T-Roc – 3,512
Volkswagen’s T-Roc rounds out the best-sellers list for the month. It occupies a key position in the company’s SUV line-up, bringing with it some of the features of the larger Tiguan, but in a smaller and easier-to-park setup.
The T-Roc will also continue to be available in ‘R’ specification, which brings with it a powerful 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and four-wheel drive.
