Tesla is the best-selling brand of luxury and premium cars as of the first quarter (Q1) of 2022. According to InsideEVs, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer’s sales have risen and the company’s new registrations top the list of luxury cars. Tesla is up with 113,882 new car registrations. In addition to all those registrations, the number marks a whopping 59 percent more than in 2021.
Who was the best-selling luxury car brand in 2021?
BMW was the top-selling luxury and premium car maker in the United States as of 2021. However, Tesla far outperformed BMW in the first quarter of 2022. BMW is only down three percent, which is not the case compared to Audi’s 37 percent. seem to give much cause for concern.
How did everyone do?
Most luxury and premium car manufacturers dived into new car registrations in the first quarter of 2022. It’s not a small drop either. The average decline in new vehicle registrations of the best-selling luxury car brands based on: InsideEVs’ list is about 27 percent.
However, some companies are hurting more than others. For example, while BMW is down just three percent, Audi is down 37 percent and Land Rover is down 39 percent. While nearly every other luxury manufacturer on the list is down, Genesis, a Hyundai company, reported a 53 percent increase.
Luxury manufacturers aren’t the only automakers experiencing a breakdown. For the first time in a long time, the Ford Mustang outperformed its rivals. 2021 was not a good year for the pony car, with the Dodge Challenger consistently outperforming it. However, the first quarter of 2022 saw a Mustang revival, and like Tesla, this indicates that sales of even the best-selling auto brands may change from quarter to quarter.
Is it too far to call Tesla a luxury car manufacturer?
While most consumers won’t be quick to refer to Tesla on the luxury car shortlist, this one definitely belongs on the list. Premium Teslas like the Model X and Model S are spacious, comfortable and packed with modern technology. Plus, with price tags like the Model S Long Range’s $101,190, shoppers are sure to spend luxury car cash on the Tesla EVs.
