The original Citroën DS was always a great vehicle that needed a reliable powertrain. That’s less of an issue with today’s DS models thanks to the power of PSA and, more recently, Stellantis. It would be a bit unrealistic to anticipate a spectacular six-pot, but in the age of electric and hybrid vehicles, power is at least relatively accessible.

The DS 9 is a brand new product. It debuted in early 2021 as a competitor to vehicles such as the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series.

On the outside of the recently released DS 9, we didn’t have to change anything, because it already looks fantastic. However, DS focused on improving the vehicle’s 4×4 capabilities. To this end, DS has redesigned the vehicle with unique, wider front and rear axles.

DS also modified the braking system; the front and rear each have 80x32mm and 290x12mm discs respectively. Furthermore, the shock absorbers, springs and stabilizer bar were specially built for this car. It is also equipped with DS Active Scan Suspension.

The 2022 DS 9 E-Tense is the epitome of brilliant French craftsmanship

With a ton of chrome trim adorning a modest four-door body to give it a truly premium look, the DS 9 certainly looks the part. In addition, its wide roofline sets it apart from a group of competitors who are all attractive but lack excitement.

For example, while the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series are beautiful machines, they are hardly stunning. But the DS is actually a very attractive vehicle.

The chrome blade that runs through the center of the bonnet and the smart LED headlights and daytime running lights are just two details that contribute to this.

Even the backlight, which seems to break through the body, is a nice touch. As this is the E-Tense plug-in hybrid version, there is subtle E-Tense branding throughout, including a cool ‘E-Tense 4×4’ decal on the rear.

There are also more subtle things to look out for as this is the fastest DS 9 you can get, such as the slightly wider track and the slightly lowered suspension. There are also large 20-inch alloy wheels that hide upgraded brake calipers.

That’s all true no matter which E-Tense 4×4 360 version you select. However, there are minor differences between the two trim levels. The more expensive Rivoli+ has a more luxurious, chrome-focused look, while the “base” Performance Line+ variants feature the gold-red decals of the DS.

The creation and calibration of the drive unit and suspension of the DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360 was overseen by DS Performance, who won every Formula E championship in 2019 and 2020. The dynamic tranquility that DS Automobiles consumers love is rising to new heights.


Intelligent four-wheel drive transmission supports a 200 hp 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors, one 110 hp and attached to the front gearbox and the other 113 hp and located on the rear axle. With its smart management, the 11.9 kWh battery can manage different applications while saving energy.

On the WLTP city cycle, the DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360 covers 32 miles, or 29 miles on the WLTP mixed cycle, in zero-emission mode.

With homologated CO2 emissions of 133 mpg on the WLTP cycle, it reduces fuel consumption to 1.8 litres/62 miles.

The top speed of the DS 9 E-TENSE 4×4 360 is electronically limited at 255 mph, with an electric-only top speed of 140 mph possible. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.6 seconds.

This DS shows its most daring bloom while driving. Look away now as you enjoy the purity and simplicity of Teutonic design. The designers believe that what is presented here will be a wonderful antidote to all that and a celebration of all that is avant-garde in French fashion. Knowing what to look for first is difficult.

Double-stitched Alcantara panels flow from both doors over a fascia closed at each corner by oddly shaped vertical vents. A lavish analog clock from the French chronologist BRM pirouettes out the top of the dashboard upon startup. Curiously chamfered “Guillochage”-patterned knobs parade on either side of the phallic-shaped gear lever.

The 12.3-inch Digital Instrument Cluster display is also distinctive; it can be configured in various ways to present the most relevant data, including a voluminous navigation map. This screen can be viewed through the thick-rimmed wheel.

Everything else you need to know is available on this 12-inch HD touch-sensitive center display. Despite containing all temperature control functions, it also serves as a gateway to the unique upgrade of the FOCAL Electric Hi-Fi system with 14 speakers.

The 2.9m wheelbase gives the rear passenger a good amount of space to spread out in the back. A class-leading 510 liter large trunk is located in the rear.
