This is why the Land Rover Discovery Sport was the best SUV of 2019

2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport

land rover badges adorn finely sculpted, off-road-ready SUVs. On the other hand, Range Rover Versions combine the brand’s renowned robustness with enhanced elegance.

The cheapest variant is the more compact Land Rover Discovery Sport. The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport opens the door to new customers on a budget by combining traditional British elegance with a competent off-road mentality.

The Discovery Sport SE is Land Rover’s most fuel-efficient SUV. It is less expensive than the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Its innovative all-wheel-drive (AWD) technology makes it much more adventurous than its car-based competitors. Unlike the BMW X3 and Lexus NX, the Discovery Sport has a small but handy third row of seats.

Driver assistance systems, which are standard on most rivals, remain optional on the Discovery Sport. It has plenty of power thanks to a variety of 2.0-litre turbocharged engines. However, the fuel consumption leaves much to be desired.

Let’s take a look at the Land Rover Discovery Sport and why we think it was the best SUV of 2019

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport has great powertrains

There were three 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines with power ratings of 150, 180 and 240 hp for customers to choose from. The 150 hp variant was available with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, the rest had four-wheel drive automatics as standard.

With a strong, muscular power delivery and sharp performance, the 240 horsepower model is decent. The motor isn’t the quietest of its kind, but it’s more than smooth enough for most buyers’ demands.

Given the current perception of diesel, the two petrol models, each with a 2.0-litre engine with 200 or 250 hp, are arguably more popular than in the past. The 250 horsepower engine is punchy, quiet and smooth. Like the other engines (apart from the 150 diesel), it is also equipped with mild hybrid technology to boost efficiency a little bit.

Nevertheless, depending on the engine you want to pair it with, the nine-speed automatic transmission is a bit of a mixed bag. Paired with the D240 diesel it doesn’t shift as fast as it could, but the P250 petrol seems a lot more polished: fast, smooth and incredibly responsive.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport has exceptional off-road capability

Discovery Sport’s primary four-wheel drive means it can easily get over most minor obstacles and through trails. However, it lacks the industrial power of a Discovery or a Range Rover.

The Discovery Sport has 8.3 inches of ground clearance with approach and departure angles of 25 and 31 degrees. A Subaru Outback has similar numbers, but the Discovery Sport can cross nearly two feet of water. It is more than capable and certainly more than any motorist will encounter from the well-maintained approach to a weekend cab.

Discovery Sport’s traction management system adjusts differential lock, steering weight, accelerator pedal and transmission tuning to meet mechanical requirements for different traction conditions. For snow it needs a low speed start, while for sand it sometimes needs high speed wheelspin.

While it doesn’t have a low-range transfer case, the Discovery Sport can hold its own in all terrains thanks to its Terrain Response program. It is easy to operate thanks to its innovative architecture.

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport interior is full of interesting features

With seven seats in a luxuriously padded cabin, the whole family can travel comfortably on large or small trips. Even if they’re sent to the tiny third row, adults won’t emerge completely limber from behind, no matter how short the excursion.

Standard features include an infotainment system with 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, dual-zone automatic temperature control, 10-speaker audio system and 10-way power front seats.

Soft Windsor leather, adjustable interior lighting and heated front and rear seats are standard on the high-end versions. Land Rover offers a whole range of driver assistance systems, but none of them are standard, and to get them all you have to buy several extra packs.

One package includes automatic emergency braking, lane assist, driver attention monitor and traffic sign recognition; another has a head-up display and a self-park function; and adaptive cruise control, as well as blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic warning.

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport has an aggressive-looking exterior that draws people to it

The silhouette of the Discovery Sport is relatively unrelated Land Rovers earlier models.

Due to the shape, the model now looks more like a real SUV. However, it still works well because of the steeply pitched roofline, the spear-shaped fender openings that are followed by a character line the length of the body, and the wheel arches that are filled with at least 18-inch tires for a fashionably oversized look.

Its shell-shaped bonnet, honeycomb grille and slim headlights help it blend in with other Range Rovers. The roofline crosses the rear arches and ends in a short tailgate that resembles a backwards hat.
