Maruti Suzuki’s next-generation Brezza subcompact SUV has returned to India’s best-selling SUV within two months of launch. The SUV came to the top of the SUV segment, ending Tata Nexon’s best-selling SUV lineup since the beginning of the year. Hyundai Venue, the rival of Maruti Brezza who also launched in its new avatar around the same time, has yet to impress in terms of sales. Venue doesn’t even make the top 10. For Hyundai, Creta remains the sole standard-bearer among the best-selling cars.
Here’s a rundown of the top 10 cars sold in India in August:
After a short silence, sales of the new generation Baleno premium hatchback are expected to increase. The 2022 Baleno was the best-selling car in India last month with 18,418 units sold in August. There is a marginal jump in Baleno sales compared to July, when Maruti sold 17,906 units. However, the increase in sales is significant compared to August last year, when Maruti delivered 15,646 balenos across India.
Maruti Wagon R:
Maruti’s other popular hatchback WagonR was pushed to second place by Baleno last month. Maruti sold 18,398 WagonR units, less than in July, when Maruti sold 22,588 units of the hatchback. Compared to August last year, WagonR sales have more than doubled. Maruti was only able to sell 9,628 units in the same period last year.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza:
The biggest change in the list of top 10 cars in India is the revival of Maruti’s flagship SUV Brezza. Maruti Suzuki sold 15,193 units of the new Brezza last month, beating Tata Nexon by a few units. Brezza didn’t do well enough in July, the first month since launch. But made up for it in August by retaking the SUV crown after quite some time. By August last year, Maruti had sold 12,906 units of Brezza.
Maruti Suzuki had launched the new generation Brezza in June at a starting price of 7.99 lakh (ex showroom). In its new avatar, the Brezza received heavy updates in terms of appearance. Maruti has also packed in several features, including a few firsts in the segment, to make the new Brezza more attractive.
Despite losing the SUV crown to Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon’s subcompact SUV remains a car to be reckoned with as it posted solid sales in August. In fourth place on the list, Nexon was presold by a fraction by Brezza. Tata Motors sold 15,085 units of Nexon last month, up from 14,214 units in July and even more than 10,006 units sold in August last year.
Alto, Maruti’s smallest car to date, remains as popular even after decades on the market. Launched in a new avatar in August, the Alto showed why it remains a strong performer last month when Maruti sold 14,388 units of it. It’s a huge jump from 9,065 Maruti units sold in the previous month.
Hyundai’s flagship compact SUV Creta remains the only car from the Korean automaker to regularly feature in the list of top 10 sold cars in the country. Hyundai sold 12,577 units of the compact SUV, slightly less than 12,625 units in July. Crete sales have been consistent over the past year. In August last year, Hyundai sold 12,587 units of Creta in India.
Punch is Tata Motors’ second best-selling car after Nexon. With 12,006 units sold last month, an improvement on the approximately 11,000 units delivered in the previous month, Tata Punch has made its mark as a popular small SUV among Indian customers.
Another consistent performer among the regulars on the top 10 car list is Maruti’s from Eeco. Maruti sold 11,999 units of the Eeco last month. In July, Maruti sold 13,048 units of the van and 12,597 units in August last year.
Dzire remains the only sub-compact sedan to feature in the list of top 10 cars sold in India almost every month. Maruti sold 11,868 units of Dzire last month, up from 13,747 units in July. But compared to last August, when Maruti was able to sell just 5,714 units, this is a huge jump of more than 100 percent. The sedan has long been due for a facelift.
Completing the list of top 10 is yet another Maruti hatchback Swift. Maruti sold 11,275 copies of the premium hatchback. However, sales have fallen dramatically after Maruti Suzuki sold 17,539 units in July, when Swift was India’s third best-selling car. By August last year, Maruti had sold 12,483 units of the hatchback.
