Top 5 High Safety Rating Vehicles You Can Buy in the Used Car Market

Safety is one of the most important aspects when it comes to vehicles, and India has taken this issue lightly for a long time. However, in recent years there has been a drastic change in the attitude of authorities, manufacturers and car buyers. While features such as dual airbags, ABS (anti-lock brakes) and seat belt reminders have become standard equipment in all cars, some models are now also getting features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and six airbags in their variants.

Safety watchdog Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has been promoting safety for several years with its ‘Safer Cars For India’ program and awards stars based on its crash tests. And in recent years, several popular cars have achieved high safety scores. So if you are looking for a high security car on a budget, you can find several options in the used car market. And here are 5 cars we think you should consider going for.

Tata Nexon (5 stars)

The Tata Nexon has a 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP.

The Tata Nexon was the first Made-in-India car to receive a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, making history. The sub-compact SUV was launched in late 2017 and was crash tested in 2018, achieving a 4-star safety rating. In the same year, Tata made some additional changes to the car and was retested, achieving the high safety rating of 5 stars. The Nexon is offered in both petrol and diesel choices and based on condition and model year you can find a good used Tata Nexon starting at around Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 10 million.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza (4 Stars)

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was one of the most popular SUVs in India and recently received a major facelift, with the company also dropping ‘Vitara’ from its name. First launched in 2016, the Brezza was crash tested by Global NCAP in 2018, achieving a 4-star safety rating, making it the safest Maruti Suzuki car in India. At the moment it is only offered with a petrol engine, but until early 2020 Maruti only offered it with a 1.3-litre diesel engine, which is the one we think you should have. You can get a used Maruti Suzuki Brezza for Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 9.5 lakh depending on the model year and condition of the SUV.

Mahindra Marazzo (4 Stars)

The Mahindra Marazzo is one of the more underrated cars in its category. The MPV is quite capable and one of the safest options in its class. Launched in 2018, the MPV was crash tested the same year, receiving a 4-star safety rating from the Global NCAP. The Mahindra Marazzo is solidly built, has a spacious interior and an economical diesel engine. Depending on the model year and condition of the vehicle, you can get a used Marazzo for anywhere between Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 12 million.

Volkswagen Polo (4 Stars)

The Volkswagen Polo was one of the most beautiful and fun to drive hatchbacks in India. The car was first launched in 2010 and has spent 12 years in the Indian market, but VW never really gave it a real update and was discontinued due to declining sales. However, you can still find several options in the used car market if you are looking for a high security hatchback. The Polo was tested by Global NCAP in 2014 and it was the variant with 2 airbags that achieved a safety rating of 4 stars. So look for a used Polo from 2014 with dual airbags. While the newer Polo came with a 1.0-litre TSI engine, the older model was offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine, and you can get one in the market for used cars for anywhere between Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 8 million.

Toyota Etios (4 stars)

The Toyota Etios is yet another capable car that offers great handling and fuel-efficient engines. The only areas where it was lacking were the features department and the quality of the interior. That said, the car received a decent 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP when crash tested in 2016. Although it is now no longer for sale in India, you can still get several options in the used car market. The car was offered in both petrol and diesel engine options, and you can get a used Toyota Etios for Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 5.5 lakh depending on model year and condition.
