Audi may have added a V10 engine to the R8, but the V8 still charms car enthusiasts.

When we talk about cars, V8 engines always ask for a special mention. The V8 engine cars still have a special place in the minds of car enthusiasts. Despite being so powerful and efficient in smooth acceleration, V8s are increasingly becoming an endangered breed of powertrain.

Automakers that once relied on V8s for their exotic and powerful cars are now opting for smaller capacity engines to reduce tailgate emissions. Even the Mercedes-AMG C63 switches to a hybrid four-cylinder engine where the mighty V8 disappears.

A V8 engine is an eight-cylinder piston engine in which two banks of four cylinders share a common crankshaft. The cylinders are arranged in a V configuration. Hence the name V8.

Here’s our pick of the top five V8 cars ever built.

Range Rover

Range Rover is not only one of Land Rover’s iconic true blue off-roaders, but is also known for the mighty 3,528cc V8 engine under the hood which was capable of producing 135hp of power. The engine could power the 4×4 SUV. Its massive torque was enough to tow the vehicle over and through any terrain. The engine lasted until 2002.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

The British luxury car tent’s 5.3-litre V8 engine began its journey in 1968 with the DBS. Later it ended up under the hood of the Vantage with 438 hp power. The engine started life with fuel injection technology, but later switched to carburetors in mid-1973.

Audi r8

One of the smoothest and most powerful luxury sports cars of our time is the Audi R8. Its arrival in 2007 was a sensation as it challenged the Porsche 911. The 4.2-litre V8 engine that powers this German luxury sports car was another reason behind the hype. The V10 later introduced in the R8 made the car faster and more powerful, but the all-aluminium V8 engine has always held a special place in the agendas of car enthusiasts.

Mercedes-AMG C63

Mercedes-AMG has a long history of using V8s, but the AMG C63 stands out for its 6.2-liter V8 engine. The German luxury car brand updated this model after its first introduction in 2008. The engine was biblical and agile and delivered refined performance, making the car stand out in the pack.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Whether it’s smooth roads, rough terrain or dune bashing, Toyota Land Cruiser is known for its mammoth power and extreme off-road capability combined with the luxury on offer. The 4.5 liter V-turbo diesel engine under the hood of this 268 hp SUV is something that deserves a special mention. The V8 is one of the elements that has enabled the Land Cruiser to take on challenging off-road tasks without hesitation.
