BANGKOK — BYD, China’s largest electric vehicle maker, will make Thailand its first manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia, a move likely to challenge existing Chinese brands in the kingdom that are poised to take advantage of an expected, government-supported increase in demand.

According to an official from Thailand’s Board of Investment, BYD will invest a total of 17.9 billion baht ($488 million) in Rayong province, where it has reportedly purchased 700 rai (112 hectares).
