Top Gear is known for taking the most expensive, fastest, rarest and most superfluous horsepower supercars in production and testing them to the limit.
The latest episode of the Top Gear YouTube Channel can surpass all previous videos. This is John Hennessey’s baby – the Venom F5.
The craziest hypercar in the world
The F5 is powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 1,817 horsepower. The car is made largely of carbon fiber and weighs 2,998 lbs. The F5 goes from 0-60 mph in about 2.6 seconds, which is less time than reading this sentence.
Even more impressive is that 0-250mph happens in 15.5 seconds. Twice as fast as the Bugatti Chiron. Jack from Top Gear tells us all the stats as he sweats in the driver’s seat at the start line of the drag strip at Hennessey’s headquarters in Sealy, Texas. This is not sweat from the heat, he tells us, because he has the air conditioning on. It’s pure nervousness, stress and anxiety.
Yellow, Yellow, Yellow, Green
The first launch takes place at 1:53 of the video. Jack tells us the wheels spin a little in first gear, but the car just bounces off the line. In no time, and looking like he’s just traveled in the NASA g-force simulator, he crosses the finish line and hits the brakes hard, driving almost off the end of the runway.
He smiles and tells us he hit 150 mph on that run. He tells us NOTHING on the road this feels in terms of acceleration or speed. Jack also says the engine vibrations, noises and general feel of the car are all signals to strain your neck and stomach before you drive off and yet the g-force is simply amazing.
Jack tells us that Hennessey’s history has been to upgrade cars from manufacturers such as the Ford Mustang, Dodge Chargers and Challengers, and even trucks such as the Ford F-150, Dodge Durango and many models of the Jeep range.
However, this Venom F5 is a completely custom car – John Hennessey’s design from the ground up. Our presenter tells us that the car’s name is a derivative of the F5 Tornado, which has speeds of up to 318 mph. This car is faster, with a hypothetical top speed of 340 mph. There were rumors that the car would be the Bugatti killer, but so far these were just rumors.
Jack tells us the car is here and very real. Unfortunately, if you were hoping to buy one, they are all sold out despite the $1.9 million price tag. We would like to be in the presence of one.
Very well done, Mr Hennessey.
