The electrification of the auto industry is gaining momentum as several new automakers jump on the bandwagon and the existing brands electrify their ICE-powered models.
Fully built-up (CBU) luxury brand electric vehicles have appeared in numbers, but frankly, they are far from the reach of the majority of the population in India. It’s the affordable mass-market section that will boost sales, and here’s the best of the best that’ll be making a splash soon:
Tata Tiago EV
Expected launch: September 28
Expected price: Rs 10 lakh (ex showroom)
Planned to make it debut on September 28the Tiago EV will be the latest electric addition to Tata’s stable of electric cars. The electric hatchback is likely to be the most affordable EV in the country, and Tata could offer it with a 26 kWh battery pack derived from the Tigor EV, which has a claimed range of 306 km. It will borrow features such as cruise control and regenerative braking from the Nexon EV and gain additional features such as connected car technology over the standard Tiago.

Expected Price: Rs 17 Lakh (ex-showroom)
The long-awaited Mahindra XUV400 was unveiled this month. It shares its rationale with the XUV300 but is 200mm larger, thanks to tax exemptions on electric vehicles. The electric SUV is powered by a 150 hp electric motor in combination with a 39.5 kWh battery pack. The setup has a range claimed by ARAI of up to 456 km and can be charged to 80 percent in 50 minutes with a 50 kW charger. Citroen C3 EV
Expected launch: July 2023
Expected price: Rs 10-14 lakh (ex showroom)
Citroën’s next offer in the country comes in the form of the electric version of the C3. on petrol. The electric hatchback was first spotted during a test run in India ahead of its expected unveiling in December. It will likely get multiple powertrain options, including the 50 kWh battery pack with a range of 350 km, which can be found in the Peugeot e-208 (same platform) in international markets. The Lemon C3 EV could also get a smaller battery pack with a range of about 300 km.
MG’s second electric car
Expected launch: August 2023
Expected Price: Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom)
MG will launches another EV in the pipeline in addition to the ZS EV sometime next year. The upcoming vehicle will likely be a small electric city car, but will be a mass-market offering with highly localized parts to keep costs in check. It can come with a more compact powertrain than the ZS EV, which gets a 176 hp electric motor with a 50.3 kWh battery pack with a range of up to 461 km. The price of MG’s upcoming electric car is expected to be around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), MG’s upcoming electric vehicle will brighten things up in the electric vehicle segment below Rs 15 lakh, rivaling the Tata Tiago and Tigor EVs, as well as the Citroën C3 EV.
The influx of new electric cars has risen sharply over the years and will continue to do so, as most automakers have already outlined plans for all-electric lineups. Although the electrification of entire portfolios is still a long way off, the transition to it is in full swing.
