NATCHEZ – A security guard crossing a school who was hit by driver Gilmer McLaurin Elementary on Tuesday afternoon during school discharge has been flown from Merit Health Natchez to another hospital for further medical care, Natchez Police Chief Joseph Daughtry said.
The crossing guard, identified as 74-year-old Samuel Fields, was on alert and spoke to officers before being transported to hospital, Daughtry said.
The extent of his injuries is still unknown.
“The crossing guard stopped the traffic and buses arrived. As the fourth bus pulled away, for some reason a lady hit the bus and when she did, her vehicle swerved and hit the crossing guard,” Daughtry said.
The school bus had 12 children and the driver in it and none of them were injured.
The driver of the vehicle appeared very upset and was taken to hospital as a precaution, Daughtry said. No other injuries were described at the time of this report.
Investigators aren’t sure why she didn’t see the guard, Daughtry said, adding, “Maybe the sun was in her eyes. We are not sure.” They do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved.
“I’m thankful it wasn’t as bad as it could have been,” he said.
