One of the most common protests that comes up when talking about an electric vehicle is that the person often has to tow something unachievably large for many thousands of miles. Until this particular electric vehicle can tow something unfeasibly huge over many thousands of miles, this person just isn’t interested.
A common refrain, to which there are usually two answers – the first is ‘Dave, mate, this is a Fiat 500’, and the second is ‘Perhaps electric cars are not for you right now if you regularly have to tow unfeasible large objects many thousands of miles. Take a diesel. You can still buy a diesel that can tow something unfeasible over many thousands of miles. You will enjoy more. And when you’re gone, it’s just a little quieter.’
But Dave, come back boy, maybe I’m being a little too mean, ’cause you do have options. Options like hiring someone else to do this miserable job for you, or even admitting to yourself that your daily driving doesn’t quite reflect this rural road trip image you’ve built up in your head. It goes for all of us, we buy our cars based on the extreme examples of travel that we don’t actually do that often.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could move to a utopian society where we equip ourselves with transportation that suits us best for those 95 percent of our trips that probably take place within 10 minutes of the home, which don’t often take more than 20 miles in one go. Traveling where maybe one or two of us are in our cars at the same time? Then we can borrow the bigger cars for those times when we need them. Like the library of things that the council just opened the way to my house. Because I don’t have to leave a carpet cleaner or tile cutter in the shed all year round.
However, being pragmatic, it will be a long time before we reach that position on our roads. After all, an Englishman’s car is his castle. Fortunately for Dave and many of those other folks who haul unfeasibly large things for unrealistic distances, BMW’s iX is a charming all-rounder.
All BMW iX models are capable of towing an impressive 2500 kg trailer, which is an impressive feat. Which means we’re free to pick our pick from the range – we park the £111,905 M-badged version of the car even with its 548 mile WLTP range, save ourselves £34k or so and go for the entry-level xDrive40- version for £77,305. Because realistically 247 miles is still enough, even if you think it’s not Dave, and besides, you would even be standing under all that BMW for weeks on a fast charger with a 105kWh battery.
But the BMW is an impressively chic car, with a distinctive interior that everyone will ask you about. It is decorated with diamond-like controls that make you feel like you’re in a special episode of the crystal maze and there are touch controls somehow hidden in the wood in the center console that make you feel like you’re on Star Trek† Now there’s crossover television that we didn’t know we wanted to see.
Admittedly, nothing that anyone has made in the electric vehicle field yet relates to the fact that if you’re towing something and want to charge it on the way to wherever you go, you probably need your precious guidance to get close to the plug. to be able to come. Nightmare. Maybe it’s just better to sell the caravan, buy that Fiat 500 and stay in a hotel instead.
