Successful car design is no mean feat. In today’s automotive landscape, most vehicles seem more dull and mundane than dramatic and heartbreaking. And that fact makes us wonder about the other side of the coin. Which car designer is the best of them all? The competition is fierce, fast-paced and packed with milestones in automotive history.
Our leading image is none other than Marcello Gandini, the man behind the design of the Lamborghini Miura. Known to many as one of the most beautiful cars of all time, it is just one of many notable Gandini designs. He is also responsible for the Countach, the Alfa Romeo Montreal, the Bugatti EB 110 prototypes, the E12 BMW 5 Series and the Renault 5 Turbo.

That’s a huge range of specialty machines, but it’s worth noting that quite a few of the world’s most impressive car designers have similar resumes. is perhaps best known for its influence on British cars from brands such as Jaguar and Aston Martin. He wrote the designs for the new F-Type, the I-Pace, the Aston Martin Vanquish, DB9 and the DB7.
Yet he is also responsible for the shapes we know as the Ford RS200 and the Nissan R390. The Jaguar C-X75 was also all his. Speaking of Japanese vehicles, Shiro Nakamura also deserves some credit for his contributions. They include the latest GT-R, the Nissan Fairlady Z and even the Infiniti Essence. He even had a big hand in the crazy but sweet Isuzu VehiCROSS.
Old-school designers should also be part of this conversation. Harley Earl may not be a household name for the newer generations, but the car he designed, the Chevrolet Corvette, still is, and maybe not if his original work on it hadn’t been so good. Of course, he did much more than just the Vette. Cars like the Buick Y-Job, the Le Sabre and the 1927 LaSalle Roadster all come from his head.
However, these guys are not alone. We have a feeling you’ll have a ton of other designers worth considering. Let us know in the comments below… who is the greatest car designer of all time?.
