When you think of an affordable compact sedan, the Toyota Corolla is probably the first car that comes to mind. That’s normal considering how popular this is Toyota is in the United States in several form factors, including a hybrid sedan, a subcompact SUV, and a hatchback. It’s mostly the sedan that talks about numbers, but now, with the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross, it can take a refreshing turn.

The Corolla has been an iconic model for Toyota in a way, given that it has come to the 12th generation model. It remains well-rounded even in its 2022 MY guise. The Toyota Corolla is the bread-and-butter model of the company because it’s made a name for itself, is reliable and offers great value for money spent.

The 2022 Honda Civic is a direct and most competitive rival to this Toyota, but that’s a story for another day. Today we tell you about the secret bits that helped keep the 2022 Toyota Corolla at the top of the US sales list.

The Toyota Corolla is a master of all trades and a man of nothing. And that’s the secret to being one of America’s best-selling cars.

Toyota Corolla’s simple and healthy formula works every time

Despite being one of the best-selling units, the Corolla is still ridiculed for its thin doors and undersized 1.8-litre base variant. The Corolla’s strong brakes have been much appreciated, while the acceleration from the 2.0-litre engine is said to be sufficient. Even the sharp-looking Corolla hatchback lacks none of the good features buyers are looking for, such as a fast, refined and responsive engine, one of the highlights.

The Corolla hatchback, with its manual transmission, would be a hoot to drive, but the clutch reportedly doesn’t feel like it. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is top notch when it comes to fuel efficiency, delivering power without any abruptness. Also, the ride feels composed and, and inspires confidence. The soft-touch dashboard is beautifully designed; nothing seems too exaggerated, and we don’t like our cars that way!

That said, this is a model where road noise finds its way into the interior. A premium package is available for those who want to feel like they are in a somewhat expensive car. The 2022 Toyota Corolla makes a strong case for itself, and if there’s one to go for, it has to be the Corolla Hybrid.

2022 Toyota Corolla looks sharp

The Toyota Corolla is not a beautiful car, but a sharp looking one. The character lines give it an attractive silhouette to look at, as do all the angular elements around it. It’s not a plain-looking car like the Volkswagen Jetta, but other sharp-looking compact sedans like the new Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra are likely to confuse buyers a bit.

At the front it has a large grille and razor-sharp headlights with integrated LEDs, while the hood has some sharp creases that give the nose some visual power. It has clean lines along the sides, while the rear profile is equally stylish, and the shape of the rear bumper reminds us of the previous generation Corolla.

2022 Toyota Corolla offers a comfortable experience

The Corolla is not as roomy as the new Civic, but the Corolla gets more luggage space in the back. However, the interior of the Corolla is airy and the light color tones on the inside are pleasant to see. It’s a great looking cabin, with some nice touches, especially on high-end models that come with leather-like touch quality.

There is sufficient comfort in the front, but the space is somewhat limited in the rear. The front seats offer a lot of support, and they also get the heating function. The space in the back should be enough for about two full adults.

2022 Toyota Corolla is safely and technically loaded

The Corolla hatchback and sedan have been awarded five stars by the NHSTA, including the rollover test and front and side crash tests. Some basic safety features include lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam, automatic emergency braking and much more.

Additional features include a 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch touchscreen, and the Corolla hatchback gets the 8.0-inch standard. All modes come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Customers can also opt for a JBL sound system and built-in navigation.

2022 Toyota Corolla packs sensible performance

All Toyota Corolla sedan models come with front-wheel drive, with the entry-level L, LE, and XLE getting the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. A CVT automatic transmission is coupled to the engine. The Corolla can sprint from 0-100 km/h in about 10 seconds.

The high-end models, such as the SE and XSE variants, come with the more powerful 2.0-liter engine that delivers 168 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Again, you get a CVT automatic here and some variants get a six-speed manual. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid gets the same 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, but gets a hybrid system.

It thus produces a total power of 121 hp. If fuel economy is what you’re looking for, look no further than the hybrid model, and the gas-powered Corolla, with its 2.0-litre engine, manages to deliver a good 40 MPG. The Corolla hatchback also delivers an equally impressive mileage, with the automatic gearbox.

What’s not to like about a car that gives you everything, starting at just $20,425, and being labeled “the most popular sedan in the world”? It may be clear to you by now that the cumulative effect of several sensible aspects of this modest sedan makes it one of America’s bestseller. It’s not rocket science!
