Why the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is Canada’s best-selling plug-in hybrid

In the second quarter of 2022, Jeep’s plug-in hybrid off-road SUV surpassed super popular plug-in hybrid vehicles such as Toyota Prius Prime and Toyota RAV4 Prime to take the title of best-selling PHEV in Canada for the second quarter of 2022.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe sales in Canada in Q2 2022

According to a press release from Jeep Canada, the Jeep Wrangler was instrumental in the brand’s encouraging performance in the second quarter of 2022. According to Jeep, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe proved to be the best-selling plug-in vehicle in Canada.


Of the 47,184 vehicles Jeep sold in Canada in the second quarter of 2022, 18,734 were Jeep’s. With this performance, Jeep posted a 29 percent growth from its performance in the second quarter of 2021. Jeep has stated that the Wrangler posted record sales in the second quarter of 2022, with sales coming in at 7,209 units over the period. .

Stellantis has not disclosed how many units of Wrangler 4xe have been sold in Canada. However, Stellantis said about 20 percent of total Wrangler 4xe units sold in the second quarter of 2022 were Wrangler 4xes. Since Stellantis has sold 7,209 units of Wrangler, about 1,440 units should be those of Wrangler 4xe.

With the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep has shot two arrows with one bow. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a true four-by-four SUV, just like any other version of the Wrangler. But the impressive EPA-estimated 49 MPGe fuel economy and an EPA-estimated 21-mile electric range mean that driving the Wrangler 4xe is far more fuel-efficient than any other version of Wrangler for now.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe has the most advanced heart for a Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe came to Canada in 2021 and is currently available in two variants in the five-door Unlimited guise, the hardtop Unlimited Sahara and softtop Unlimited Rubicon. These versions of the Wrangler 4xe are powered by a combination of a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, 270-hp turbo petrol engine, a 44-hp front-mounted electric motor and a 134-hp rear-mounted electric motor.

This combination of a turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors results in maximum power of 375 horsepower and maximum torque of 470 lb-ft. These numbers make it the second most powerful version of the Jeep Wrangler after the Rubicon 392, which claims 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler 4xe also gets a 17 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, providing 21 miles of electric range. This battery pack takes 2 hours to fully charge using level 2 charging with 220 amps and 12 hours with a 110V wall outlet.


Jeep Wrangler 4xe is just another Wrangler off the road

Like other versions of Wrangler, the 4xe version also has a four-wheel drive system, denoted by the suffix “4xe” (pronounced four-by-e). As the suffix suggests, the Wrangler’s four-wheel drive system benefits from electrification. The front and rear motors provide extra instant torque, which is useful for rock climbing. This SUV’s four-wheel drive system also includes Dana 44 axles and a 2-speed transfer case. Further off-road capability is possible with a ground clearance of 10.8 inches and a wading capacity of up to 30 inches.

Jeep also claims that the lithium-ion battery pack can also provide power during off-road driving. In addition, the Wrangler 4xe also gets throttle through wire brakes, which aids regenerative braking for the electric motor. The person driving the Wrangler 4xe can adjust speed with the manual mode of the transmission, with the electric motor simultaneously providing improved throttle response.

The adoption of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe will encourage more automakers to introduce newer four-wheel drive/four-wheel drive plug-in hybrid SUVs. Until then, it looks like the Wrangler 4xe will continue to compete with the Toyota RAV4 Prime for first place.
